The version of sagemath in the repos is old and broken. Any suggestions on how to get a working version installed?

Upstream Debian has 8.6, which we might be able to backport for MX 18. It has 39 different patches, so odds are that they won't all work on the latest 8.8 source, and that would mean a lot more work for that version.

The normal procedure for updating a package is to request a newer version from the MX packaging team in the Package Request forum.

A backport appears to involve a large number of additional backports be done first...
have you tried the Linux binaries that are directly downloadable from the Sage project's home page?
