.chm is a compiled meta html file from microsoft Calibre does not read those natively. You need to convert to a supported format (or so Mother Google informs me). You can try using this tool... it might work and get your files into a more main stream format like epub:

I've always used xchm for chm files.

Calibre says it supports .chm files, so this looks like a regression.
Do you still have the 3.42.0 version in your apt cache? /var/cache/apt/archives/ If so, you could reinstall those debs, calibre and calibre-bin, and then lock them in Synaptic.

Try FBReader. It opens the few chm files I have and you can click on the "gear" at the top,select COLORS and set the background, text, etc however you like.
