Spanish Latin American Keyboard layout issue

#1 Post by Moltke »

Hi everyone! Hope you're all having a nice life! I recently made a MX 18.2 clean install, I selected Spanish Latin American Layout keyboard cause that's my language but when in the user password step I couldn't type anything cause it wasn't the right layout. I managed by creating a temporary pass with numbers which did work. When install process finished and the pc restarted I noticed in the panel a Serbian flag, so my guess is that something's wrong and that in fact by selecting Spanish LA layout you're actually selecting a diffrent one like the Serbian as it happened to me. I had to select Spanish from Spain and it worked. By the way, apart from this little yet annoying incident everything works great just as it did in MX 16, 17 and 18. Keep up the good work! :number1:

No idea about the Serbian problem, although I've been known to mis-click. :)

Here in Venezuela the keyboards I've come across over the last 35 years or so, are not LatAm but rather have Spanish layout. Keep trying.:)

Take care with special keys in passwords.
Thinkpad T430 & Dell Latitude E7450, both with MX-21.3.1
kernal 5.10.0-26-amd64 x86_64; Xfce-4.18.0; 8 GB RAM
Intel Core i5-3380M, Graphics, Audio, Video; & SSDs.

Are you from Venezuela? So am I. I never had this problem with any of the previous versions but only with MX 18.2. I changed the password once I booted the system
I'll try to reproduce this in a VM and post some screenshots so you can see what I'm talking about.

@Moltke,

I'll switch layouts to see if I get Serbia. :)

Been using the us_altgr layout for the last year since both laptop and netbook have English keyboards.

But it's weird, since the LatAm and the Spanish/España layouts are considerably different.

Trying Spanish (Sun dead keys).
Funny, found that Settings/ Keyboard Layouts doesn't work from the menu? But Keyboard does.
[Found you actually have to have a second layout set then it worked.]

Richard en Ojeda as in Ciudad Ojeda? Here's a screenshot of the issue; as you can see while LATAM layout is selected that flag is shown on the panel and now that I see it again it's not Serbia's but Laos'. So obviously something's wrong.

You said this is a fresh install.
Did the md5sum check OK?

Sounds like you might have a gotten a broken download, due to the differing responses.

I'll check later but earlier I realized I have turned off the flag changing icon, although I did get Spanish (sun dead keys) as well as the English International layouts.

md5sum checks O.K. Just as showed here https://mxlinux.org/wiki/system/iso-download-mirrors/ which is 52e8471a92c50bfd95180b15d7abb6e3 for the MX-18.2_x64.iso

I'm telling you, something's wrong.

Yep. Something strange going on.

How many keyboards are active in
Settings > Keyboard
just in case...

I've never changed much in there,
only add or remove keyboards.

If by keyboards you mean keyboard layouts, there are 2; English and Spanish. The other one with the issue I only added it to show the problem, but I removed it since it's useless to me. I don't change much in there either.

@Moltke,
Glad you resolved it.
Sometimes an extraneous click gets us into unfamiliar territory.

At least one can always reboot
& choose another keyboard layout. :)
