xfce panel Places plugin

#1 Post by BV206 »

I have noticed that the Places plugin on the xfce panel has a Recent Documents menu that doesn't behave the same on MX18 as it does on other distros I have tried.
It doesn't show all recently opened documents, such as it won't show any text files opened with Featherpad by clicking on them in Thunar.
Some times folders are shown in Recent Documents.
I don't know if this is a bug or something not configured properly. I don't remember if it was like that on MX17.

We certainly haven't changed it, and as far as I can tell no release has been made in the last 5 years. You could go to the Xfce Forum and search on that term to see if any posts have come up that might be relevant.

I just installed it, having never looked at it before. For me it sees the last 10 items I have touched, IIRC, a number that can be increased in Properties. One thing I really like is that if the search command has been filled in with catfish or another, then a search is one click away.
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

I must have broken it, or something else did.

I never looked at it either. Pretty neat. It does not show text files that I opened with featherpad either. Or any .txt file for that matter. But does show LibreOffice files opened. I have not checked other files.

EDIT: If I open a .txt file with LibreOffice writer it does show in the list.

Does it make any difference between Qt applications like Featherpad and VLC and GTK ones? Fpad and VLC have their own recently opened menu items, too.

I tried my unmodified non-persistent USB and get the same behavior.
I don't know which apps are Qt or GTK and which are not.

That appears to be the case. When opened with Geany the txt file appears in Recent documents but not when opened with Featherpad. For BV206, Geany is a GTK app.

Well it looks like Places isn't really broken like I originally thought. I think it's just another case of software using different standards. I just installed Mousepad and it populates the recent documents.

Goodbye Featherpad, hello Mousepad.
