I'm not looking to dumb things down, I am simply suggesting a simple way to configure MX upon first use. I am also not suggesting that the welcome gui be replaced with the terminal. What I am suggesting is that maybe the link to MX Tweak is replaced with a link to a terminal app called something like "MX Setup".

The aim of the app is to make the initial setup as quick and painless as possible. I saw a forum thread a few days ago which suggested things to remember when migrating to MX 18. A setup app would eliminate the need for this.

I am soon going to be migrating MX 16 to MX 18, and a list of things to remember which are easily accessible via the terminal would be really useful. People can make suggestions for what should be included in the list, a few examples I can think of are MX Tweak, Select Sound, Set Cleanup, Boot Options, Codecs installer and System Locales. Setting swappiness, the option to turn zRam on and off and hp-setup could also be included. If someone doesn't know what these settings do then they can look in the manual.

The end result would allow MX to be set up in a matter of minutes.

I don't think so. I'm not a fan of using the terminal, but if it provides useful functionality then I don't care. It would generally only ever be used on the initial setup, so it's not going to make MX look like a relic.

Anyway, this is only a suggestion which I thought was worthy of throwing in the mix.

We all are working at different skill levels. It will always be that way. The beauty of this community has a lot to do with the excellent and patient help offered to those who request it.

There truly is never a perfect design nor level of detail. Perfection in those & other realms comes from those wonderful people who help those in need...

That wouldn't work for people like me who are command line illiterate. I agree with Adrian. If they can't read the manual there is no way they are going to be able to read what's in the Terminal. I found that the developers made it very easy to set up MX Linux to my liking.

For the command illiterate. There is helper of sorts. Just not sure right now if MX packaged Cli Companion for MX or not.

That I installed local on AntiX 15 32 bit long ago.
Don't remember how I did it. Could be I grabbed a Ubuntu .deb or installed from source tarball.
This install is years old.

Automotive High School Trade School graduate top of the class and the highest score in the whole state 1982 on the New York State Automotive Repair Certification test with numerous automotive technician degrees later on from Mercedes Benz and Ford Motor Company New York State Inspector that still can't make sense of the Gibberish of the command line which I first experienced back in 1982 and still doesn't make sense in 2018. Not lazy as I worked so hard that I became crippled from it. Thanks for that link on that Giberish.

If there is one thing you need to learn it is cut & paste... with that you can become a computer command line expert.

This idea maybe better suited to AntiX as their are some already great command line tools too use. (antiX-cli-cc , cli-aptiX , inxi , conky etc)

Plus Ranger the best file browser I have ever used , vim , ncmpcpp , zsh . their is nothing wrong with the installed bash script at all.. (all third party) + many more

MX = GUI (even though I you this with i3)

CLI Companion Does it run in cli mode. Their you go GUI helping CLI users awesome. What came first the egg or the chicken..

You must mean copy and paste which I have been doing on this and other Linux forums which is all I can do when it comes to the command line. It doesn't make me an expert but it serves it's purpose.
