Yep, you need a swap partition.

I am running MX 17.1 as a VM host on a Win 64-bit guest.
You are right about the misunderstanding, I typed it the wrong way round. I have a Win machine as a host and MX as a guest in a Virtual Box VM. My apologies.

Anyway, I will try to set up a swap file.

@Stevo: to make it absolutely clear: I have a Windows PC, which is the host, and have Virtual Box installed on that, in which I have MX running, so MX is the guest, or perhaps I should say the 'subguest' :-)

Here is the output from the

Code: Select all

inxi -p -admin
command suggested by Oops:

Code: Select all

cache pressure: 100 (default) dev: /dev/sda2
The last line shows a swappiness of 60, so that needs to be reduced to say 10, right?

Yeah, probably.

Code: Select all

Memory: RAM: total: 1.42 GiB used: 1.10 GiB (77.2%)
But you want to avoid using swap like it's the plague, anyway, especially in a VM. Is there any way to give the VM more RAM to use, or is 1.42 GiB the most you can give it? You can change the RAM allocated to the VM once it's fully shut down.

@Stevo: I reduced the swappiness to 10 yesterday, and so far everything has been OK. If the problem recurs or I find the PC is labouring then I will adjust RAM - I have a total of 6 Gb. Like I said, I now have few Win programs open, I am using mostly MX in VB, which also contributes to stability, I think.
