Hosts file

#1 Post by Klaas Vaak »

Why isn't there a hosts subfolder in the etc folder? If there is, I cannot see it, even with root permission.

Because debian does not use a hosts or host folder in /etc

Don’t know why you have not got a host file there should be one. Have use it with web sites from http://someonewhocares.org/hosts/ since MX14. Just to check you have scrolled down far enough it is a file and not a folder (apologies if I have just stated the obvious).

I have inside /etc/

host.conf
hostname
hosts
hosts allow
hosts.deny
MX-23.2_x64 July 31 2023 * 6.1.0-20-amd64 ext4 Xfce 4.18.1 * 8core AMD Ryzen 7 2700
Asus TUF B450-Plus Gaming UEFI * Asus GTX 1050 Ti Nvidia 525.147.05 * 2x16Gb DDR4 2666 Kingston HyperX Predator
Samsung 860EVO * Samsung S24D330 & P2250 * HP Envy 5030

hostname
hosts

@Eadwine Rose: yes, I have those too. I apologise for the question. In antiX and e.g. in Ubuntu the hosts file resides in the Hosts folder, itself in the etc folder.

@PondLife: you are right, my apologies. In antiX and e.g. Ubuntu there is a Hosts folder in the etc folder, and the hosts files reside in that Hosts folder, which is what I was looking for. Sorry. I should have looked further.

Oh no it doesn't, There is no hosts folder in /etc on antiX. No idea about Ubuntu. As I posted, it is Debian policy/decision Not to have a host(s) folder

You are right that it does not exist in antiX either. I am also looking at Ubuntu and have an issue with an amended hosts file that I am trying to resolve. That's how I got my knickers in a twist ;-) Thanks for the correction.

BTW, is there a specific reason you know of why Debian decided that?

P.S. in Ubuntu it doesn't either ! I have been busy with Autohosts and that got me a bit confused.
