console font change only applied with systemd, not sysVinit

#1 Post by baldyeti » Thu Nov 01, 2018 6:38 am

Hello, something odd I noticed is that if i change the font used for the console (dpkg-reconfigure console-setup), the font change is only applied for future reboots if i pick the systemd grub entry (hence not the default sysVinit). Observed with both 4.15 and 4.9 kernels. No big deal but perhaps someone knwos how to fix it ?

I make those changes by opening a console, right-clicking the screen > Preferences... > Appearance tab.

I meant the text console (to which you can switch using e.g. Alt-F1), right-click does not apply there.

You can change it by editing the
/etc/default/console-setup
file.

systemd uses the
/etc/vconsole.conf
file.

Thanks for investigating.

My /etc/default/console-setup mentions the font and size i want, but this is only taken into account across reboots with systemd.
However, I see /etc/init.d/console-setup.sh exists (and is exactly the same as under stretch) and is linked to /etc/rc5.d - so should be invoked on startup.
If I run manually "service console-setup restart", things are as expected.

I have no /etc/vconsole.conf.

Again, no big deal, but I am curious to know whether that is a particular glitch with this system (intel HD2500) or other users see the same behaviour (in case anyone cares; the console remains usable anyway)
