MX16-64 broken by nvidia updates

My MX16-64 was updated May 21st and nothing broke.
The updates that I had applied on June 26th broke X windows.

Removing the nvidia packages & reboots did nor resolve.

Did you remove them using the Nvidia driver installer in MX Tools? Did you try reinstalling them with that tool? If so, did you accept the backports option?

It appears that you had the MX version of the drivers installed, and then they got upgraded to the debian version that got updated on June 16. It's the same version that was in jessie-backports, so accepting the backports option may fix this.

If you are not booting to a GUI anymore, you can run

from a console terminal.
