Pinta wants to crash
Pinta wants to crash
Pinta crashes fast after opening a png or jpg picture (from within the application). This seems to be a common problem related to the mono runtime. Here is some info about it:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... ug/1686173
The solution seems to be to upgrade mono. It's possible to add an official mono repo for Debian from the link below. This is what is suggested in the link above.
http://www.mono-project.com/download/st ... lin-debian
Do you think it is a good idea to add the repo to solve mono bugs (and Pinta crashes)?

Re: Pinta wants to crash
Yes, she is crashing on me as well in Debian Stable MATE. Especially if I open a 2nd image. Shame because in the past I never had issues with Pinta.dreamer wrote: ↑Fri Jun 08, 2018 11:25 pm Pinta crashes fast after opening a png or jpg picture (from within the application). Re: Pinta wants to crash
Pinta is no longer maintained by its developer. The crashes are one reason we removed pinta from MX-PI-Popular-Apps, although it remains in debian's repo. For me the crashes had to do with opening and closing files, but not necessarily with editing.KBD wrote: ↑Sat Jun 09, 2018 11:02 amYes, she is crashing on me as well in Debian Stable MATE. That's a shame. It was always on my apps to install after a fresh install. Will remove it then.dolphin_oracle wrote: ↑Sat Jun 09, 2018 11:06 am Pinta is no longer maintained by its developer. Anything similar to Pinta? I have Gimp, sometimes it's a bit too much though.

Re: Pinta wants to crash
for me, I use mtpaint for basic stuff (think paint from the windows world). we have krita in our repo (test repo maybe?) as well, which is supposed to be pretty good and built for artsy types rather than techie types. And if I'm honest, I still fire up pinta even though it is crashey. I've learned a bit about gimp but its still not "easy" for me.KBD wrote: ↑Sat Jun 09, 2018 11:25 amThat's a shame. Re: Pinta wants to crash
Perhaps Mypaint or AZpainter could replace it...
Using "paint " as a search term in Synaptic also show other programs such as gnome-paint and gpaint. Some freeware Windows paint programs also run fine in Wine.

Re: Pinta wants to crash
My previous experience indicates that the latest version of Pinta (1.6) is stable. I have used it numerous times in Ubuntu 14.04 and it has never crashed. Because of this I knew that the problem was in the Debian/Ubuntu mono packages.
The Pinta devs are taking a break, but at least one of them wants to get back to the project when time permits.
So I installed mono from the official repo for Debian 9 (MX-17). There is also a repo for Debian 8.
Pinta is now happy and so am I
This is what I did. Perform these steps one at a time (first line was unnecessary on my system). Taken from here:

After those instructions replace the buggy mono packages with:

Re: Pinta wants to crash
Thanks! I need to spend more time with Gimp. I've used it a bit, but seems a big learning curve to get comfortable with it.dolphin_oracle wrote: ↑Sat Jun 09, 2018 11:28 am
