Using "paint " as a search term in Synaptic also show other programs such as gnome-paint and gpaint. Some freeware Windows paint programs also run fine in Wine.
Will take a look at mypaint. I used that years ago but had forgotten about it.

Edit: mypaint looks like it might easily replace pinta.
