(solved by replacing software) Default Acrobat reader font wonky after installing test Gimp

#1 Post by Eadwine Rose »

Hi all

I installed the test version of the new Gimp a little while ago, and mentioned my fonts going wonky on that one. I have roughly gotten things back to how they were however with Adobe Reader the font remains something that it shouldn't be and it is annoying.

This font is not the font I saw when I first opened this file (which was way before I installed the new Gimp).

Can someone help?

To add: I already renamed the .adobe folder in /home/username, didn't solve it.

Well, fonts are provided and used through an kind of alias/matching mechanism.
In the case of your original PDF-file it seem to have been created using a specific font (i.e. non-embedded font but indicated within the PDF what font best to use). The alias/matching mechanism will resolve the best-matching font available within the system. In your case it appears the PDF-recomended font is not available in the system, so it will use a fairly close alternative for the display and printing. Now if you install (assuming via gimp-update) a new font which is "closer" to recommended one the next time you open the PDF it will take the new "better" font!
It depends certainly on what fonts are involved and which one you prefer to get displayed in yourr PDF.
The match-alias alternatives can be listed using the command fc-match.
With the font-match alias definitions you can adjust which font your prefer to be used within an application for a font which is not available within the system.
But without knowing which fonts of the acrobat-reader font-family are involved it's hard to tell recommendations for adjusting alternatives.
Have you tried to compare you PDF-file using MX default xpdfviewer and the acro-reader.

I would also check to see how it looks in Master PDF Editor. That's another good, fast freeware PDF viewer.

The font is different and normal looking in qpdfview. It seems only Adobe Reader is affected.

I'll see about getting that editor.

The easiest solution is likely to ditch the Adobe Reader ;)

Acro-reader might have a different "idea" how to match missing fonts.
In addtion to sort the adobe-fonts (?) issue:
Beside the alternative use of another pdf-viewer like xpdfviwer, master-pdf editor, etc
I do see further alternatives:

1: if the PDF-creating application involved allows to embed the missing fonts you might use embedding fonts when cearting the PDF. By this the fonts will not be searched from the system through font-matching

2: If you own the "original" fonts ( I assume the adobe-fonts) and are available you might install those onto linux

ttfn :fox:
PS: sure ditch adobe -- I do never use it!

LOL yeah... to fuss with just that one program's fonts, much more effort than it is worth... I have replaced it with the master PDF Editor.

Fehlix and Stevo, thanks for the help!! Didn't know about MPE but it looks interesting alright :)
