Guess what. I'm sure we can solve this together. Don't give up to quickly.
Let me think about to provide you a way to get this installeld, without you having any further "coding stuff" (as you call it).
But give me a day or so. Let' me know if you want having some alternative approaches, and I'll provide you with some proposals.
You'll see ... Happy
You're very kind, fehlix! :-) Thanks so much. Glad to know the thread is useful, and your offer of possible alternative approaches and proposals is wonderful. I look forward to continuing, and wish you a lovely happy day. :-)

Well having thought a bit how we can have booting your nice little system
into MX Linux as appears to be a bit unwilling to do so, yet.
Now, we have different ways to tackle this.
I could write a list of all further potential areas we have to look after and even prepare
some scripts you might than need to copy/paste and run the script etc etc.
But actually this approach would look kind we handle this like a try’n’error strategy, and I’m a bit hesitant to go that road.
What I rather suggest and what potentially might be faster and quicker for you
and us to get you flying MX Linux: Why not having a quick remote support session in the next days?
If that would feasible for you and you do not have a too slow network-connection I might send you a PM with instructions to set this up.
For the technically interested folks what we might do within such
a support-session to convince this till now reluctant system to boot into MX Linux happily:
- adjust GRUB from within your current linux to frugal-boot MX-linux
- adjust GRUB from within your linux to usb-boot MX-linux
- from within booted MX linux create an USB stick using MX-Usb creator tool
- tweak the MX-usb stick to either BIOS-only or UEFI-only bootable
- ...
- and certainly some more steps will come to mind
Will certainly report back here success or otherwise!
And remember if we manage to nail down this boot-show-stopper You would have been helping us to be prepared to help other.
Looking forward … ttfn :puppy:

That sounds a great idea, fehlix, and thank you for offering to take time to do this; very kind. I'll need a little time to get the system backed up ready to 'move house', plus you needn't worry about trying anything at all, as I can just do a quick vanilla reinstall anyway, in preparation, and have MX install usb's ready etc. I'm on UK-time but a funny o'clock sleep pattern, lol, but if you give me instructions and a choice of times over the next couple of days that suit you, I can pick one and look forward to going ahead. Where are you based? My internet's 100mb, and expressvpn drops about 8mb from that, so we should be good to go. What software/settings would we use for the remote? Not done that before.
I look forward to helping with anything I can when I can in the future too. It is very generous indeed to offer such help, and I really appreciate it. :-)

That's great, fehlix; just an hour difference. Looking forward to the magic stuff, and hear from you later. Thank you very much again. :cat:

I did a vanilla install of Mint, making no changes to it and no updates, to get things ready, and tried the 17.1 usb install ... it worked and everything installed! But, unfortunately unable to boot in: error 1962 no operating system found, boot sequence will automatically repeat. Posting via ipad. I've read something about grub just needs telling what to boot, but such wizardry is beyond me, lol, but progress is happening! :-)

EDIT: I'd been using the 17.1 x64 final, but have been able to install and boot the 17.1 April x64 iso! Lenovo's can have some unusual errors, but the install had zero issues. Lots to learn! Thanks for a wonderful distro, and thanks again fehlix for offering such kind assistance.

EDIT2: oops, had issue with Expressvpn, but, after noticing a member of the forum reference booting MX linux via Advanced systemd option, the issues are fixed ... had been able to install the deb fine previously, but the activate and connect happened via alternate boot, yay.

MX Linux 18.3 64 bit
There really is a problem with writing to a flash drive. After recording, the flash drive does not load in UEFI
error: invalid sector size 65535
press any key to continue
In Legacy mode, it loads normally.
How did I record?

Code: Select all

sudo dd bs=4M status=progress if=/way_to_image.iso of=/dev/sdx && sync
"sdx" my flash drive
I checked the md5 checksum of the image, everything is fine.
Then I tried to burn to DVD. And there is the same problem! In UEFI mode it is not loaded, in Legacy mode it is loaded.
So there seems to be an error somewhere in the disk image. Dear developers, pay attention and fix! I have no such problems with other Linux distributions (it loads normally in UEFI).

Do you see the GRUB boot menu? Or is the error message from GRUB it self?

Everything at UEFI.
Does not reach the GRUB boot menu if a flash drive. The error is immediately on the screen. If DVD, then GRUB boot menu is visible. When choosing a boot, it does not load further.
In Legacy mode, it loads normally without errors.

That might be an stick issue. As you should at least see the Grub menu.

DVD: Can you make sure no other USB stick is plugged in.
This is a "known" issue, when ISO booting in UEFI, and fixed in the next version.
Suggest to create the Live USB stick using Live-USB-Maker, which probaly will avoid the boot show stopper.
You could run Live-USB-maker from running in legacy mode.
