Fine! You need run the iso check also
navigate into your folder with the latest MX iso and run and compare the iso

Code: Select all

md5sum MX-17.1_April_x64.iso
c2ef3d943898b4ebbd28f40a2eae14ee MX-17.1_April_x64.iso
If you are on Mint's MATE you can run Mint's USB-image writer to make the dd-imaged USB stick!
Oops, a lot of posts, so I can understand things getting a bit mixed up. I'm using the Final release, not the April snapshot, which I just read a moment ago has a little glitch to do with grub?

Md5sum checks out, and, yes, using the USB image writer to make the stick. Have done it on 2 different USB's and downloads, but the main USB referenced here and that I've just run tests on is the HyperX Savage 64 GB USB 3.1/3.0 Flash Drive.

Grrrr, lol, this 'thing' is winning at the moment ... I can't imagine what it can be now; my last Mint Mate install was done cleanly and via UEFI. I don't choose the 'clean entire drive' option on install, as it seems it would take a very long time, especially on a 1tb drive, but may need to consider doing that.

Maybe inxi -Fxz will give some clues.

Well, you need to run the badblock check for the whole device as otherwise the can not be confident that this has not caused the error!
(See my latest command-line above.) To boot woth the dd-image-USB-stick is slightly different to the liveUSB installed variant.
Thats why I would try to do this first. Hope you forgive me the "Sir" ;=)

The Mint USB image writer is a dd-only one. I dont think that's the issue.
I'd rather be a bit suspicous about the bad usb blocks.

Hi and thank you very much for suggestions. Sorry, but I'm getting too confused. I have to say I've had no issues with other installs, or the usb keys, etc. There aren't any bad blocks was what the tests showed up, and no damage to drive. I don't know what dd-image and liveUSB difference is.

Looking at the MX install guidance, it looks like partitions have to be manually altered and set up? I really am at a loss as to why the live usb won't run/no way to install. There's nothing in the inxi sections that suggests there'd be an issue?

And no worries at all about the 'Sir'; it was funny, and I understood. :-)

Looked in bios:
SATA Mode [AHCI Mode]
Onboard ethernet Enabled
LAN Boot Agent Disabled
Core multi-processing/Intel(R) Speedstep Technology/Intel(R) Virtualization Technology ... all Enabled.
CPU ID 306c3
Microcode Revision 19
ACPI Standby Mode [S3 (STR)]
Secure Boot Status User Mode
Secure Boot [Disabled]
and USB Key is 3rd from the top in primary boot sequence list, with USB HDD and USB CDROM at the bottom of the list.
CSM Enabled
Boot Mode Auto
Boot Priority UEFI first
Quick Boot Disabled
Boot Up NumLock On

Rereading the whole thread again.
A short summary:
The issues is about a boot error.
The USB stick was dd-imaged using Mint's image writer.
The two steps to verify the MX17.1-iso and the verify the UBS-blocks
have been proposed.

What I'm not yet convinced with is the proper verification of
the whole ISO, i.e. not only the check of the MX linuxfs and vmlinuz files.
The USB-stick badblock verification was only done on a part of the stick
not the whole stick.
Only with both checks done sucessfully I'd go further with trying to nail down the boot error.
Different USB-sticks come to mind as well other image writer.
But let's do it one step after the other.

I'm sorry, I don't know, but thank you, fehlix, for summarising things :-) There's nothing in the inxi details or boot information that shows a potential issue? I followed the instructions to check the USB and iso, but can't find any CDs. I've earlier tried another USB and another MX download, and if usb 2 or 3 ports make a difference. Sorry, am getting a bit overwhelmed; am not too good with lots of code, and avoid workarounds etc as much as possible.
Thanks to you and everyone who's taken the time to advise, but I think I'll need to check at some other point to see if a different installer will work, or if I can wipe the drive thoroughly and see if that helps, etc. Very sad to not be able to come over to MX at this point, but hopefully sooner rather than later will be able to. I'd been looking forward to contributing some wallpapers etc too! (am very arty) and you've all been great ... I just can't do any more code stuff; sorry, but thank you very much for offering further help.

Don't worry. And believe me, You are helping us! As your approach to sort and view this, is helpfull to review how we could help.
Guess what. I'm sure we can solve this together. Don't give up to quickly.
Let me think about to provide you a way to get this installeld, without you having any further "coding stuff" (as you call it).
But give me a day or so. Let' me know if you want having some alternative approaches, and I'll provide you with some proposals.
You'll see ... Happy
