live usb invalid sector size 65535

#1 Post by teddylegs »

Hello :-)

I was just trying the 17.1 live usb, but unfortunately can't get it to boot [previously the 17.0 live usb had been fine]. It says 'error:invalid sector size 65535', followed by 'unaligned pointer 0xc9c65a48'. Then 'aborted. press any key to exit'. I should say that I'm no good at any technical workaround things; just reporting it and wondering why it's not working, and if I can try again if there's a fix later down the line? Running it from Linux system, so bios is already altered.

Can you please try another flashdrive, also did you check the MD5sum of the ISO? This is the first time I see this report so it's not something we can "fix" it's probably something specific either to your flashdrive or machine and we need more info.

Also, if MX 17.0 works for you there's no reason to install MX17.1, if you update 17, you get 17.1 the only difference is the kernel that you can update from MX PackageInstaller, more info here: https://mxlinux.org/migration

Thanks for your message, Adrian. I'd tried 2 flashdrives and downloads, and unfortunately don't know how to check the MD5sum; I used the 64-bit torrent link from MX's download page.

Good to know that 17 would update to 17.1 anyway, and thank you very much for the link and pointing me to MX PackageInstaller. :-)

EDIT: just tried the MX 17 live usb and it's giving the same error. All I can think is that I'm using kernel 4.15.0-13 now, Mate instead of Cinnamon 18.3, and a different microcode ... I can't recall which kernel I used when previously trying MX 17, but it may have been 4.11 or 4.13. Seeing the error referencing grub2/various distros also, but am not sure how that would mix in with a different kernel/microcode etc.

Once you boot the usb in the bottom there are a number of options using the F1 F2 etc keys, IIRC the md5sum check is under F4.

Checking the iso itself is right click on the iso and click compute md5sum.

Thanks Eadwine Rose :-) I'm afraid the errors are happening too fast; very briefly the option to choose to boot into the live environment comes up, but it's for about a second, then the second error hits. Sorry, I can't find any right click setting like that; I'd done a torrent download, then needed to find an MX 17 download, which I did through Sourceforge. (I'm on Mint Mate 18.3).

Find the downloaded iso, right click on that and then click the md5sum option so you can cross check it with the md5sum file given.

Very sorry, but there's nothing coming up about that ... I click on Properties, at the bottom of the list which comes up when I right-click, and am looking in every tab, but there's no md5sum, eek. Basic tab says volume unknown, and iso shows as 1.3 GB (1272971264 bytes). Then there's the Emblems tab, followed by the Permissions tab (unknown 'SeLinux context' and unknown 'last changed'). Then there's 'open with', and then the last tab, 'notes', contains nothing. I've just looked up how to do this on Mint Mate and it's beyond me, unfortunately not just a right click (if only!).

open a terminal, move to the spot the file is in, and type

Code: Select all

md5sum filename.iso
Be sure to replace the filename with the actual name of the file.

Thank you very much, Eadwine Rose ... that worked great! 54619bb7ea08a9dae047580b559cc678 MX-17.1_x64.iso came up for the torrented 17.1 one. 0cd9c5003e34768d795534253bd5326e MX-17_x64.iso came up for the Sourceforge 17.0 one, so both are okay.

Yup, that works ok indeed.

Can you try burning to a dvd? To rule out the USB stick issue.

You can then check the burned DVD using

Code: Select all

dd if=/dev/sr0 | head --bytes=size | md5sum
sr0 is the location of my dvd drive, and replace size with the actual size of the iso (right click, properties, and then next to Size the long number that is between ( ) without the commas).
