After tripping over this post I decided to check out my "directory of death" which caused my previous problems.
I opened the directory with Thunar and the thumbnails started populating. The bug then kicked in and the thumbnail population stopped with my CPU running at 50%. I stopped using my computer for a few seconds and the CPU usage dropped back to normal. I scrolled up and down the directory and the CPU use went back up to 50%. I changed to a different directory, and seconds later the CPU usage was once again back to normal.
The tumblerd-monitor works superbly on my computer.
