Kernel Panic?

#1 Post by MX<3 »

I thought I should let you know about MX freezing here. Maybe you remember that my MX 16 was freezing while watching video in VLC so I had to stop using it and wait for MX 17.1?
The other thread is still on the Forum for, hopefully, helpful extra info.

I downloaded MX 17.1 March ISO, from the Torrent link on MX Website. I re-formatted my HDD, then booted the Live Disc I made from it.
I installed MX 17.1 with not a single hiccup. Still easy and quick as ever. VLC was already installed. So I just installed the Codecs using MX Codec installer.

There were updates to MX. Here is my Apt History.

Code: Select all

So I installed them too. I'm not sure in which order but this history will show it I guess.
Then I started to use MX 17.1. And am happy with it.

But... while watching a video... the system completely locked up, just like MX 16 did.
I thought maybe it's the VLC version and its codecs causing an issue because MX 16 and 17.1 have that version in common.

As the History shows, I then removed VLC and installed VLC 3 from whichever Repo you guys put it in, using the MXPI.

...but then a flash video on the internet brought MX 17.1 down too...

Maybe it's because of the upgrade to Memory I did to my system but Windows 7 has shown zero issues. Is it possible to be the Memory, even if Windows is totally fine?
I can run Memtest from the Grub Screen at start-up but even if nothing shows up, it doesn't confirm its not Memory, right?

Is it a Kernel Panic, thing? What could be causing it? The Graphics Card Drivers version? Maybe they were updated just before MX 16 started to exhibit these problems and the older Driver version was more stable?

What could be causing this? It's a brand new install of MX 17.1. No Repo damage this time...

Re: Kernel Panic?

Run MEMTEST from grub. If it passes overnight, (a few complete iterations) then a memory problem is unlikely.
Just because windows runs, does not mean the memory is OK. Linux is more strict.

I am running a 4.15 kernel, with a different nvidia video card than you have, but I have the same (latest) nvidia driver, so that sounds OK.

Your temps seem OK in inxi, what do they show when playing the video?
Can you try a different browser to see if flash crashes?
Or, a different player than VLC to play a video?

I'll do an overnight test then. I'll check the Sensors info in the middle of the next video I watch (using VLC for consistency).

Then I'll try a different video player. No idea what there is out there but I'll find one.

I don't watch flash videos very often so I'll leave that. I don't want a different browser at all. I'm totally happy with Firefox.

The Flash has always been buggy on my MX Linux installations anyway... so I won't be missing much.

I'll get back to you. Thanks.

Have you tried going into VLC's Input/Codecs settings and disabling hardware acceleration? That can cause problems with some hardware/driver combinations.

SMPlayer or QMPlayer are two really good video players that don't drag in other desktop's runtime files. SMPlayer can use either mplayer or mpv as the player backend...I like it with the mpv 0.28 in our test repo.

Many more minimalist users like just using mpv by itself, too.

Ran a Memtest overnight and it said zero errors. It ran for 6 1/2 hours and was half way through 'pass 2' when I got up.

Checked the temps in the middle of a video, of which I have watched 5 since with no lock-ups.

Before any video was running the temps were:

CPU 25 'C Mobo 21 'C GPU 22 'C

And half way through a 45 min episode they were:

CPU 31 'C Mobo 22 'C GPU 21 'C

I checked a couple more times through the day and they were all around the same as above.

I will try a different player next.

I haven't tried that yet, thanks. Maybe that'll work and I can continue with VLC.

Thanks for suggestions. So I have to install mplayer or mpv as well as SMPlayer?

Or just QMPlayer by itself?

If so QMPlayer sounds easier.

Smplayer will bring in mplayer automatically, unless you already have mpv installed. It depends on either mplayer or mpv, and you can have both installed and switch from one backend to another in SMPlayer's preferences.

So installing either SMPlayer or QMPlay2 should "just work" out of the box. QMPlayer has some built-in Internet radio station support that SMPlayer doesn't have. Both have some built-in Youtube playback capability, too.

Another player that has a lot of fans is gnome-mpv. That also should work out of the box.
