gscan2pdf says "document feeder jammed" if my flatbed scanner is locked

I tried to scan a document, and gscan2pdf kept saying "document feeder jammed"--peculiar, because my scanner doesn't have a feeder. It's a flatbed. Eventually, I realized it probably meant the lock latch on the underside was in lock position; unlocking it got rid of the error message. It's not a difficult problem, but would it be possible for the designer to clarify the error message?
