Problem with Xfburn

This is to warn others that I have found some problems using MX-17's
Xfburn to record data disks on dvds. Some important LibreOffice files
I thought were backed-up earlier this year turned out to be unreadable
when referenced a few months later.

Spot-checking this time around, I see this is related to MX and Xfburn.
I'm not a diagnostician, but I have found using another Linux LiveUSB
and Brasero solves this problem. I never ran into this problem before
when using another Linux and Brasero for this kind of backup.

Never seeing this problem before, I now can see I may have been remiss in
checking-out my back-ups in more detail before putting too much reliance
on them before actually need to refer to them.

My problem with MX and Xfburn on a LiveUSB is easily repeatable trying
to backup LibreOffice data on a read/write thumb-drive to a DVD on my laptop.
Neither the LiveUSB nor the read/write data media has an indication of
filesystem corruption, it may be noted.

How have have you determined it is related to Xfburn?

Have you tried to burn the same files to the same batch of media using Xfburn, and checked to see if you still have unreadable disks?

Are the settings, especially the burning speed, the same between Xfburn and Brasero?

Note that all the Linux CD/DVD burning programs use the same underlying commands; the only difference is in the GUI.

I get the ff error with Xfburn as result of recording at speed setting at max or 8.

It has been my experience with Xfburn to be buggy on MX Linux and other Linux distros as well where the data is not readable after burning a disc. That's why I prefer to use Brasero.

I think I'll just add Brasero and be quiet.
MX is working quite well for me otherwise.

Interesting. I've never tried anything except creating an ISO, so never noticed that. I am going to test here.

Out of curiosity I burned some random files to a CD with Xfburn. I could open image files and text files, but got an error when opening anything in LibreOffice (.doc, .odt, .rtf, etc). So I tried it in some other distros and found that the failing files would open in earlier versions of LO (5.3.2.2, 5.1.6.2) and would open in versions of OpenOffice. So the problem seems to be with the newer version(s) of LibreOffice.

Checked antiX and it is the same way - installed abiword and was able to open the files, so the OP hasn't lost the filed that he backed up - just needs to use something other that LibreOffice.

Need to burn the files with something other than Xfburn and see how they act.

Just tried Brasero - acted just the same. Image files and text files open - files trying to open in LibreOffice fail.

So we don't have an Xfburn problem, but a LibreOffice problem that fails on ver 5.4... it works on ver 5.0..., 5.1..., 5.3... those are all I have to test with.

Try upgrading to the LibreOffice in Debian-Backports to see if that fixes things. It did fix the "open over Samba" problem.
