O.k., this works fine. mihail_bc wrote in his above posting that this works for him, too, so I am marking this "SOLVED".
Btw. it seems that actually fixing this kernel bug has troublesome implications, so the many owners of this card reader will probably be dependent on this workaround for quite some time. Let's hope that the kernel developers will produce a real fix in the future.
