Best Way To Get Taskbar Plugin for XFCE ? (DockbarX)

#1 Post by nathan2423 »

I am interested in this XFCE panel extension for "pinning" buttons to the panel as in Windows 7 etc. Maybe this facility is already built in and I am missing it, but if anyone else does this, is the procedure described here the best way to achieve this?

https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2090875

I see THIS also, but it doesn't appear to be in the repos so I am not sure which way to proceed - https://git.xfce.org/panel-plugins/xfce ... ar-plugin/

OK Maybe THIS is what I want -- DOCKBARX -- http://www.webupd8.org/2015/09/dockbarx ... dated.html

From 3.8.3 Panel Section of MX Users Manual
Install new panel items by right-clicking an empty space > Panel > Add New Items. You then have 3 choices:
-Select one of the items on the main list that pops up
-If what you want is not there, select Launcher. Once it is in place, right-click > Properties, click the plus sign and select an item off the list that pops up.
-If you want to add an item not on either list, then select the empty item icon below the plus sign and fill in the dialog box that pops up.

New icons show up at the bottom of the vertical Panel; to move them, right-click > Move
When you add a launcher you are able to then select which application you want it to launch.

Also maybe this will help since it has pictures and step by step

VG34N:

Thanks for the reply, but that is just the standard way of adding applications to the panel, correct? What DockbarX does is make the pinned icon serve as a window indicator where the running program can be minimized or maximized by clicking on the same Icon, while the Icon changes background to indicate that it is "live" and not just available to launch. This obviates the necessity of having a set of open window indicators taking up space on the panel.

I may be missing what you are saying but I think that is why there is a separate DockbarX plugin. I guess my issue will be whether to try to use the ubuntu ppa if DockbarX isn't in the MX repos (which it isn't as far as I can tell).

here's another explanation of what Dockbarx does: http://linuxthemer.blogspot.com/p/dockbarx.html

I found all the packages I think we will need so I can try and work on packaging it tonight, after I finish up the modemmanager backport.

Vg34n you are great! I was of course hoping I would trigger someone's interest in packaging. Now that I think back I believe I found this add-on when I was with another distro, and I found it very useful. For many years I have hung on to my Windows-95/XP/ classic full taskbar, and I resisted switching til I had to work on some other people's W7 machines. I finally saw the point of the innovation and that it is useful. I will probably always hang on to the full-length taskbar at the bottom of my screen just for comfort sake, but the DockbarX add-on allows me to make more efficient use of the space and achieve the same result of knowing which programs are running. Thanks again!

@nathan2423,
If you would start a thread here, http://forum.mepiscommunity.org/viewforum.php?f=121
and call it DockBarX Thread or some such,
it will provide an easy reference for packagers and others to find the latest build in the Community Repo.

I used dockbarx in a Manjaro netbook implementation a few years ago.
It was handy but still in development. Looking forward to trying it again.
Thanks @v3g4n.

What will be the best way to get DockbarX available in MX-17? I have used it happily in MX16 and would like to continue as I move to MX17. thanks

Dockbarx, dockx & dockbar-extra-themes for MX-17 are now available in the Testing repository.
I'm not very familiar with them, so let me know how they work so (if that's well) they can be moved to the Main repo.
