have taken a look to the original MX-18 release. System comes with avahi-daemon start per default but the libnss-mdns is not installed. For this I recommend to install avahi-utils package and the libnss-mdns.
Or you go another way. Don't install the daemon. It's not necessary and system boots faster without it.
