Tropico 5 works fine on Xubuntu but not our MX Linux 17.1. I also have trouble compiling a lot of source code. I think we have some systemic issues that we must find and solve. Does anybody have some insight? What could we be missing or what could be outdated?

Lots of older programs require patches to build correctly on our gcc-6 or higher. Debian maintainers add these patches all the time. If you insist on building from raw older source, you will not benefit from their fixes.
This is not a systemic issue, as you can see from the success of our packaging team in building so many packages from source.
