mx-snapshot, directory name localization, and CJK characters

#1 Post by WangHW »

Hello good folks,

I was working on the Traditional Chinese (zh_TW) translation for mx-snapshot, and there was one thing I noticed. Some strings waiting to be translated are actually directory names where the user will be asked to check if they want to omit that directory when creating system snapshot. These are strings number 11, 12 and 14-17 in mx-snapshot on transifex site, and in line 326 to 368 in the original file mxsnapshot.ui.

What I want to confirm is, are these supposed to be translated? Because the implication is that people are getting localized directory names, and I'm used to think that it would cause problems when it comes to double-byte (CJK) characters. (That's just an impression though.)

If they are not to be translated, then there is one word that has to be "unlink" from the same word in another file. This is "Videos". In mx-snapshot, "Videos" means a directory; in mx-welcome, "Videos" means a hyperlink taking the user to videos on the MX website, and I think it is appropriate to translate the second.

First, welcome to the Forum, and thank you for your translation efforts. They are much appreciated!

Those are good questions. I think it would be best if the developer gives their input, and also other translators who have experience of the effects of translating these phrases. Are localized users then supposed to make a transition in their minds from the translated text back to the unlocalized (English) directory names they see - if that is what they see.

For 11 Don't translate the path.

For 12, 14-17 I am not sure, they could be translated but then the /home/user/Documents will be excluded or not depending on how you check that box. So I'm not sure if it's confusing to have it translated or not... Let me know if you want me to mark those as not translatable.

Thanks for the welcome and reply.

It is alright to mark these terms as not translatable for zh_TW locale in my opinion. I cannot speak for the other languages though.

Worth noting that with 3 female members on the Dev Team MX Linux may have the highest percentage in the known universe! And that the whole tone and attitude of the MX Forum goes back to the woman who started and administered the Mepis Forum (name? Blue something?)
