MX-17: Proposal: Change Conky's time representation to "24 hours"

#1 Post by MX-16_fan » Mon Feb 26, 2018 9:45 am

@all:

I'd like to propose changing the wonderful new Conky's time representation to 24-hour format.

I know that a lot of people love the 12-hour format for traditional reasons (they grew up with analog wristwatches), but only the 24-hour system is unambiguous at first glance (which is why it is being used in most professional environments).

Apart from that, ISO 8601, FIPS PUB 4-2 and various other standards recommend the use of the 24-hour system.

In case that there should be too many 12-hour lovers here, I'd like to propose linking Conky's time representation to the desktop language chosen for installation. That would mean that people who choose a language from a "traditionally 12-hour country" would get a 12-hour display, whereas people who choose a language from a "traditionally 24-hour country" would get a 24-hour display.

Greetings, Joe

we will take it under consideration.

for users following the thread, you can currently change the time format conky uses in either mx-conky or in conky-manager.

Yes, I have done it (by editing the conky definition file), but it is not easy.

It's one click in Conky Manager, as the MX Conky Help file indicates.
To change to 24hr time, in most cases you can use Conky Manager > Gear icon > Time. A few conkies are set to a time format that can not be changed (the default Gotham, for example). In such cases, click the pencil icon to open up the script itself, and click Search > Replace to change %l (lower-case L) to %H

I thought that in MX-Conky, there is a more obvious one-click option to toggle time format.

Having done my 6 years of time in the military (Signal/Communication Technology) and living Overseas in Europe where the 24 hour time format is commonly used, I wholeheartedly agree that the 24 hour time format should be standard in Conky as well. Besides, it'll teach a few people something new. ;) I like the default Conky setup and some of the others, but don't like the clock. It's not important enough for me to make manual adjustments, so I'll just leave Conky out for now.

I would reject your request to change to another fixed 24h time representation!
But rather suggest you reformulate to something like
„Adopt existing process to select correct time representation to include conky template adjustment accordingly“
as within existing startup-scripts have been already gone lot of thinking to create adjustment rules to solve this issues globally.

I have checked out every installed conky theme and only two of them have 24 hour time format ... :frown:

Thank you. Just started with MX-17.
After some other settings I changed the nice conky clock to 14:34:08 :-)

ciao
