New Theme, tailored for MX-17

#1 Post by paulxfce » Sat Jan 13, 2018 3:54 pm

As a themer I find XFCE-themes to be very old fashioned. So this is a first attempt at making my gnome-themes compatible with XFCE.

This is a XFCE-version of my gnome theme PRO-Dark (gnomelook.org) designed on-, and tailored for MX-17.

This theme uses transparant menu's and dedicated shadows. So (in the 'extra'-file) there is a special compton.conf to use.
The font is Myriad Set PRO-semibold (also included in the 'extra-file') and I set it at 11pt on DPI 102. This looks good on a FullHD screen.

And this is the theme :

You can view and download it at: https://www.gnome-look.org/p/1207818/
This theme is regularly updated, so please check...

I hope you like it...

I like it.

It's a bit like a modernised Greybird theme (and thus not completely flat) with influences from Arc but without Arc's blinding white background and overly faint light grey text. That's the reason I never use the light variant of Arc theme.

Also like the checkboxes.

My only suggestion, and that's a personal preference, is for the Whisker Menu colour to match the panel. I know some people see the Menu as another window so they don't mind it matching the colour of opened windows, but I like to see it as an extension of the panel.

Will test it out on MX later tonight.

Well, I'm not really a fan of the Whisker Menu. Allthough it is handy, it looks awful. And theming is a nightmare, because there are several versions of it. MX-17 uses an older version (1.7.5), which takes GTK2 to draw its shape. While the latest version (2.1.5) takes GTK3. As I mentioned before, I'm normally a gnome-themer. Theming for XFCE is new for me. I will have to digg a little deeper to understand Whisker's theming.

Next, MX-17 is a mixed bag, in that it mixes GTK2-apps, GTK3-apps and QT-apps and some other (unthemable) apps. So theming is a delicate balance to make them all look the same. It's no wonder there are so few new themes for XFCE...

MX-distro seems to have the more experienced linux-users as its base. The choice of app's are a give-away at that point.
And I guess giving it a distinct look and feel is not of its first priorities. As I said, I am a themer.

So this pops the question: Why does MX not have its own theme?...
