Looking good.

I assume you did this with Compton. I tried with Compton config dialog. but get no results. M 17 alpha.

Nope that's stock xfce compositor

I did try the compton compositor...worked for me and hid the panel even more completely.

Hmmm, Compton does not do a thing and the native compositor very little if anything. Graphics driver related?

The panel and whisker transparencies are controlled in their particular settings, not in the compositor sertings.

Well of course! I have done that so many times in the past. But thought there were also settings in the compositor,
