Re: MX-14 desktops-icons

#241 Post by entropyfoe » Mon Sep 07, 2015 3:07 pm

I am talking about changing the icon for a folder of music, to a screen icon that has a little musical note on it, or a folder of videos has a camera on the icon.

In KDE there were more options available.
I don't know how to get more for MX 14.4. (xfce)
How to import them into the system?

Thanks

All the icons are in /usr/share/icons/[folders for each icon theme]

For a particular icon theme, there will be subfolders for various sizes of icons and within each size, further sub-folders for categories of icons. One of these sub-categories is "emblems".

It might be possible to open Root Thunar to an emblem subfolder, and paste in additional icons (not sure if these new icons will show up when you right click on "Properties" ==> Emblems in Thunar).

You will have to make sure to copy the right sizes of icons into the respective subfolders, though.

Thanks asqwerth...
I am now poking around the xfce forums.
It seems the icons are limited, but you can add the emblems.

Thanks for showing the path to them.
Lots to learn even for a minor detail like this.

I have a clean desk top with like 6 short cuts to music, docs, downloads....and it is a nice visual cue to identify the contents to have the folder icon that matches the contents.

All this was in KDE in the old Mepis.

Sounds like you miss KDE. You know the KDE option is available in MX-14, right?

You didn't slow down because you're old; you're old because you slowed down.

Joany,

Yes I do miss the old KDE Mepis, I still dual boot to Mepis 12 (well, 11.9x beta-fully updated) though I am posting from MX now.
I know you have spearheaded the KDE conversion.

I have looked through it a few times with interest in the MX wiki.
I think it is too much work on MX 14.4 with all the tweaking necessary to get it to the full Warren level.
By tweaking I mean the fonts looking good , getting the nvidia driver, etc.
Certainly too much work to just get some icons. Icons that I am sure ultimately I can do in xfce.

Maybe after MX-15 is out it will be worth the effort. My machine has the horsepower to run KDE, and I have a soft spot for KDE since my first Linux (Suse) was KDE more than ten years ago.
Joany, from the KDE full install, how many hours to get to a Woodford level KDE? Do you get it to the same level of polish?
Any anticipated MX15 release date?

-Thanks
Jay

I only spent an hour or two getting MX 14.4 with KDE-Standard plus some tweaks to a level that is hard for me to tell from Mepis 11's polish. YMMV
Yes, even I am dishonest. Not in many ways, but in some. Forty-one, I think it is.

Same here. Mostly just followed Joany's tip sheet, and figured out a few minor things on my own.

If there's stuff we should get on the Wiki sheet about KDE, people should let me know.

A 'KDE' flavour of MX would be impractical to offer, alongside the existing xfce?

*Suspects it might need 'advanced tweeking skills' (above novice level) for a user to maintain?

(BTW - Noticing many power manager icons on desktops in this thread, I removed mine from application startup on my desktop, as with the kbd icon ("What's that?" said a friend when installing MX on his PC), but had to manually right-click to remove the power icon from menu bar as well.

I've got a new load of antiX-15 64-bit with KDE-standard that I plan on tweaking and massaging and "MEPISizing", in anticipation of doing the same thing with MX-15. I would suspect the process would be very, very similar for both. I'll start a thread somewhere and pass along what I find or any niggles I run into as I go along.
