What is the best dock to use with MX?

#1 Post by Sparky »

Is there a dock that is well integrated with MX? I like the cairo dock, but for some reason it's too buggy with XFCE. Is there a suggested dock, maybe something with animation?

Thanks, never heard of gnome-pie before, I'll give it a try!

I have been a fan of plank... but I am trying to simply use a second xfce-panel as a dock. It is light on eye-candy but it is tightly integrated with xfce and is VERY resource light.

As for gnome-pie, been there done that...it's not for me. ;)

If you are up for a little adventure try tint2... it is quite nice. You might also consider polybar. They are frequently used in window managers like Openbox, iceWM, fluxbox, i3, etc. You might also want to try jgmenu. With it and tint2 (combined) you can replace the entire xfce navigation system.

Plank is great.
Just sudo apt install plank, then just add your favorites in the dock.
(simple, easy to use, low resource usage)

I use plank or docky, both play nice with xfce.

Gotta say that my move to just using xfce panels (away from Plank) is working fine. Not as much eye-candy with xfce only but not bad. I also make heavy use of kupfer or synapse as a quick finder/ launcher. Kupfer seems a tad lighter but a bit less pretty. Always a trade-off. What can I say...

Well there are both pros and cos to using docks in general.
I mean lets face it: XFCE looks very outdated with its windows 98 styling and while one can give it a nice paint job it does feel a little old fashioned.
Not saying it needs all kinds of eye candy to look good, I mean the MATE desktop can attest for this as one can tweak that to look from anything from retro windows 98 to a modern near windows 10 appearance (and note i mainly use windows as a point of reference as its still the leading desktop OS so thats the OS most new potential users of MX linux are coming from)
But XFCE at times feels out of date, even compared to MATE.
Do note I understand why this is and yes one must favour stability over eye candy but there can be a balance.

I have written about that exact subject here in numerous threads. I have also built dozens of desktops for use by anyone who wants desktops that do both. As for Xfce being out dated, sorry you are just wrong (stable, lean, fast yes... ) but saying it is "outdated" is a pretty content free term meaning not very much. The defaults may be ugly, but that's a different problem. xfec is mind-bogglingly tailorable and customizable. :number1: I can easily make it work in under 400MB of RAM using MXLinux... can get a smaller footprint still in antiX. No problem.

But beauty is always in the eyes of the beholder...

As for looking like Windows  that is hardly a goal most Linux folks want to achieve.
