richb wrote: Thu May 23, 2019 6:53 am There is an option in System Settings>Desktop to not show Desktop Icons. I would assume if a Manual icon is added it could be configure to not show with that option. Not everyone wants icons on the Desktop. Perhaps obvious that devs would follow conventions for that icon.
if the user selects "None" from the xfce dekstop icon options, then nothing will show. its just a regular icon.
Thanks. That was my question.

At least that's how it works in Windows.

As for those wanting to call it Read the Fine Manual, it will appear on the desktop as "Read the Fine..." or something like that.
Yeah, I'm not redoing the desktop file. it will be exactly the same has it is in the whisker menu.

For clarity, I was contemplating the creation of a symbolic link /home/$USER/Desktop/ to the PDF. A symbolic link can carry any name, but the name should not be too long or it might wrap wonky or cut off, and it would be nice if it retained a professional appearance, like "User Manual" or "User Guide."

My reason for supporting the manual on the desktop idea is because a lot of users (like me) blow away the Welcome screen first off, without reading, never to be seen again, because they want to get their chops into the new OS.

Alternatively, it could be an item on the panel, like antiX does, but I think an icon on the desktop would be better marketing for the manual than on the panel, since the default panel is already busy enough.

That's a good point, user don't read pop-ups (I wonder why) but if there's a link on the desktop they might click on it if they need to find some info.

Actually, we have an icon on the 'desktop'

I think the Name should be "Manual" but the Comment should include the word "read":

Read the Fine Manual

Read the Manual

Read Me

(but not README or REAMDE).

This would mean the hover text on the desktop would be:

Install Linux

Read the Fine Manual

Both excellent suggestions. Perhaps they could become the MX motto. YMMVG. Maybe the first one should be Install MX Linux as long as that doesn't cause problems with sharing code with antiX.
