About upgrade (debian 8 to 9)

#1 Post by Exetlaios »

Hello...

Is there an easy way to upgrade/migrate the MX (debian 8 to 9 or 9 to 10 in the future) without losing the personalization/configuration of the system, or it needs a clean/new install ?

Thanks.

You can install preserving /home, which is our normal recommendation. But Xfce 4.14 is due in August and will bring a lot of config changes from switching to GTK 3 so I am not sure how well that is going to work.

In any case be sure to back up the current /home on another partition or external medium.
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

Also keep an updated list of installed packages of your system.

Code: Select all

dpkg -l > package-list.txt

Aptik-GTK in the test repo can also preserve lists of installed packages, among other things.
