migration - the kernel<resolved>

#1 Post by Bierhundt »

Is there any real advantage to migrating to a newer kernel. I'm not a guru, more of a computer illiterate. I used to use the CLI, but have forgotten most of that over the years. I've been using Linux off and on since the early 2000's. I don't use it for business, production, art, games, etc., just for surfing, you tube, BrewTarget and news sites.

I don't like to load or change anything unless it has some real advantage to me. When I was using some other distros (like Sidux, Debian pure, Mandrake, Suse, etc.), upgrading the kernel was encouraged, but I never felt that it made any improvement in my chosen distro. As well, sometimes upgrading to a new kernel put me in crash mode - some of which I couldn't recover from, even with the help of gurus!

This is just a query, not trying to start any flamewars or anything like that.
If it will help me, I'm all for it, but if it's just for my vanity, I'd just as soon avoid it.

TIA, Bierhundt

If everything on your computer is working to your satisfaction my advice would be not to upgrade the kernel except for security reasons. There are cases where kernel upgrades will be automatic when you dist-upgrade, and that decision is made by the devs.
What kernel are you using?

FWIW I have never upgraded a kernel (except as thru dist-upgrade as mentioned) and I've not noticed any problems. Honestly, upgrading the kernel has always been a mystery to me. And so far I have managed without having to tackle that particular area of linux wizardry. I would say you don't have to do it unless the devs direct you to do so.

Not too much wizardry needed to add a kernel using MXPI popular Applications or Test Repo.

Thanks for that info, I won't bother to upgrade the kernel!
I've forgotten the CLI command to find out the kernel - I'll have to find out off the I-net and get back to you.

This is the output of uname -a
$ uname -a
Linux mx1 4.14.0-3-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.14.13-1~bpo9+1mx17+2 (2018-01-25) x86_64 GNU/Linux

I don't know which one is the kernel.

It is one and the same kernel. Basically showing the kernel release, 4.14.03-amd64 and kernel version 4.14.13-1~bpo9+1mx17+2 with other stuff in between

This describes the whole line.
