@GuiGuy,
Probably the November snapshot is the most uptodate and it has been stable for me.
I went the migration route and after some trials, stayed with the 4.9.0-8_amd64 kernel.
[NOTE: Currently back on the 4.19.x kernel --seems to run cooler and ¿faster? IHMO. :]

Your hardware may be newer and require a later kernel.
The migration 17.1 >18b1 has been smooth for me.

And yes, if you have your DATA in /home, preserve it.
A good backup is recommended.

Yes !!! I did this with MX tools, although the nvidia driver was working normally here for Linux applications after the update. After reinstallation , wine 3d acceleration (for 32 bit applications) came back.

Maybe the blog announcement on the big December updates should have cautions targeted at:

1. Nvidia users;
2. people who automate their autoremoval of apparently orphaned packages;
3. people who might have enabled the third party deb-multimedia repo [might affect new GIMP].
Desktop: Intel i5-4460, 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics
Clevo N130WU-based Ultrabook: Intel i7-8550U (Kaby Lake R), 16GB RAM, Intel integrated graphics (UEFI)
ASUS X42D laptop: AMD Phenom II, 6GB RAM, Mobility Radeon HD 5400
