disabling touchpad & disolving antiX with MX <resolved>
disabling touchpad & disolving antiX with MX <resolved>
Two Questions:
1. How do I disable the touchpad so my fat thumbs don't continually erase or transfer what I'm typing on the keyboard?
2. If I were to change the repos to the MX repos on my old D610, could I eventually end up with some sort of a bastardized MX OS? The reason I ask is that I don't want to have to copy/paste all of the Brewing app (BrewTarget) and not-yet-recorded beer, wine and mead recipes that are in "Documents" files and videos. Is there any way to do this without disturbing all the present apps, docs, vids, etc., or is that just a wish that'll never come true?
If not, I guess I just need to study up on doing backups and start over with MX.
Thanks,
Bierhundt.

You might try my little Touchpad_Switcher, if you have no extra key on the keyboard to switch touchpad on/off.
Filename : Switch_Touchpad.desktop :
Code: Select all
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Name=Touchpad Switcher
Comment=Switch Touchpad On/Off
# filename : Switch_Touchpad.desktop
Exec=bash -c 'declare -A T;T=([0]=en [1]=dis); declare -A I;I=([0]=touchpad-enabled-symbolic [1]=touchpad-disabled-symbolic); D=$( xinput | sed -nre "/[Tt]ouchpad/{s/.*id=([0-9]*).*/\\1/p;q}"); S=$(xinput list-props ${D} | sed -nre "/Device Enabled/{s/.*([01])$/\\1/p;q}" ); xinput --${T[$S]}able ${D} && notify-send -i ${I[$S]} "Touchpad" "${T[$S]}abled"'
Icon=notification-touchpad-disabled-symbolic
Path=
Terminal=false
StartupNotify=false
Categories=XFCE;Settings;DesktopSettings;X-XFCE-SettingsDialog;X-XFCE-PersonalSettings;
Let me know if that works for you.

Re: disabling touchpad & disolving antiX with MX
You can choose to save your home folder when installing antiX or MX, so all your data is saved.
How about touchpad-indicator? It works a treat for me on several laptops, and has a lot more settings than in the short description.

Re: disabling touchpad & disolving antiX with MX
Thanks Stevo! Downloaded and installed. I don't know if it will stay that way when I shut down or not, but even if it doesn't stay that way, it's sure a whole lot better than losing half of what I try to type! After I figured out which icon it was (I know, I'm a slow learner!), it worked like a champ! Maybe it should go into the next release.

Re: disabling touchpad & disolving antiX with MX
As a workaround if function keys are not available to enable/disable touchpad it seems to be good.
At least on my "Acer 1 A114" those "issues" have been observed with touchpad-indicator:
- changing touchpad on/off with function key will not change status of displayed indicator icon
- once disabled with TP-indicator cannot be enabled with FN-key
- offered shortcut-bindings in TP-indicator preferences are not recognized, i.e. not functional
So assume something still left to tweak ...

Re: disabling touchpad & disolving antiX with MX
Just to note: Touchpad indicator is not working the next time you start up the laptop .. it's still installed in the menu, but it has to be activated each time you turn on the lappy - but as I said above, that's a minor thing.
Thanks! it works great!!
