We saw the same thing when trying to install grub, see my first comments in this thread. (post 80) Jerry spotted that as well.

Grub did not want to install to external USB HD. "Ok to install Grub bootloader at ?" - then failed. Just a question mark - no sda#. Same on a partition on internal HD

Adrian had a quick fix for that. From the live session, upgrade the installer with synaptic. Then do the install. In my case, it found my 4th partition on the nvme drive and installed. See post 90, viewtopic.php?p=470112#p470112

(MX Welcome issue)

I've just booted live, invoked MX Updater, and one of the updates is for MX Welcome. The version installed, and the version to be installed, are the same - 18.11.

I'm thinking that might be a clue to the problem?

yes that helps. the new version is in the dev repo, which is not enabled by default on the beta.

I just checked the repo lists, and unless I packaged the same one twice (which ispossible), the mx-welcome in the dev repo should be 18.12.05 and have the MX-18 text in it.

I'm thinking we need more feedback from people actually trying the new Beta iso instead of just upgrading their MX17 install.

Because:
1) the new installer needs some testing. It has more encryption options now, plus the layout of the window for selecting device, root, swap and boot (this is new and optional) partitions has changed. Does it work?

Due to space problems I have the Beta1 on a virtual fat plate with QEMU to install

The installation program did an excellent job.
The task was:
-on the virtual disk of 30GB to perform the installation on sda6.
-to replace the existing installation with bunsenlabs
-Integrate the existing swap
-to accept my deselection of the preselected "designations
-Grub in the MBR of sda and to integrate two more Distris with os-prober and to adopt the changed resolution of the Live on 1360x768 in the new installation.

Duration approx. 15-20 minutes

Installed from iso 64 bit to ssd. In MX-Repo Manager and MX-Packages Installer clicking about and then the link to http://mxlinux.org, results in

Failed to execute default Web Browser.

Others, eg MX Select Sound does open the Community site in the default browser. I have not checked all of them.

Hello. I'll confess I'm a "noob" here so apologies if what I'm about to say seems either simplistic or if I cause offence in any way (not intended, I assure you). I've run MX17 and have tested MX18-beta on a Dell XPS 13" 9360 with a 4K screen. I've always had to reduce the resolution to 1920x1080 in order to make things readable. However, in other distributions with an xfce desktop environment (e.g. Mint, Manjaro, Antergos) there have been options to scale down to 2560x1440 or 2048x1152. These do not appear in MX. Would it be possible to add them? I realise the difference isn't vast and that it won't be relevant to anyone else other than those running Hidpi screens but it would be greatly appreciated. So, more of a request rather than a bug.

Not what you are asking for, but I have a 1920x 1080 max resolution 21 inch monitor. I increase the dpi in the System Settings>Fonts dialogue to between 140 and 150 to be able to comfortably read the text. The other option is to increase the font size.

Only way to stop video tearing with the modesetting driver is to disable all compositor or you will have really bad horizontal rippling when scrolling pages in any browser. I have intel HD 620. I really hope this can worked out. I have not installed anyhting extra on MX-18b1. If you enable synchonize drawing to vertical blank with default compositor you will get corner to corner tearing.

Where in Mint Xfce is the setting for scaling? As far as I can see, it only has the custom DPI setting for fonts; that's exactly the same as MX.

Mint Cinnamon has a setting where you can scale by x2, which is better than nothing, but I think the only Linux DE that does 'proper' scaling is KDE.

One of the rare places where Windows actually does things better, I'm afraid.
