But alas, MX 18 is stable now one day (without the boot parameter, one day experienced 2 crashes at idle).

Yes I have flashed the BIOS on this board at least 3 times in the early days seeking stability.

Now let me know if you can run stable without the rcu_nocbs grub line.
If the new BIOS fixes it, then we no longer need to mess with this on each install.
I might consider another flash then. My rule, dont't flash if everything works. This is a gray area, it works with some messing about.
My machine finally succumbed...I turned on various Power manager settings such as "System power saving->System sleep mode=Suspend, When inactive 30 minutes." Crashed somewhere after 30 min.

Have now added rcu_nocbs=0-7 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="BOOT_IMAGE=/antiX/vmlinuz quiet rec_nocbs=0-7"

Paul, similar here...My MX18 also was crashed out to the log-in screen this morning. I have the rcu line added in grub, and I think the power settings are off, though I must re-check this tonight. So it made it a day and a half.

I don't know if it is the new kernel, but my MX17 and 17.1 with 4.15 kernel are unconditionally stable on the same machine. (uptime as high as 147 days).

Did you try adding the nvidia driver?

Okay...didn't realize the 4.15 kernel was unconditionally stable for you...I will try that tonight...I assume with rcu line in grub, right?

I'm certainly not wedded to 4.19.0-1-amd64 for any reason. EDIT: not using nVidia driver until I get a stable kernel

I had turned off the Conky toogle and today I replaced it by choosing the MX-LSD theme and I can see it on the activated desktop but as soon as I click on the desktop it disappears.
Everything else works perfect in the MX 18 beta

Paul,

I am using the antiX kernel...from an earlier post. That 4.15.5-antix is needed because it has some other parameters enabled that make the rcu-nocbs work. It should be available from the MXPI, though I have not looked lately.
Rebooted, all is good with the 4.15.5-antix.1. (still stable with the rcu_nocbs=0-11 boot parameter. )
In my early testing last year, adding the nvidia was also helpful in preventing some of the crashes. (though that depends probably on your vid card)

@entropyfoe, @paul

I'm still following the bug-reports with the ryzens with interest.I just can't stay calm.
The rcu_nocbs=1-11 parameter does only work on kernels which have the rcu_nocbs-flag set to yes.
This is the case for the antix-kernels but not the mx-kernels.

Code: Select all

$ sudo cat /boot/config-4.19.4-antix.1-amd64-smp | grep CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU
[sudo] Passwort für helga:
CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU=y
But I cant believe this is still not solved.It seems a bios-update should fix it in most cases.
Paul, following the bug-reports you have to set "Power Supply Idle Control" to "Typical Current Idle" Is this really not offered by the newest bios flash?
It's not your motherboard and a german thread, but a picture of an Asus-board-uefi.Power Supply Idle Control is there.

Just scroll backwards in this thread to post 80 where I reported the problem.
Then in posts 90 and 94 Adrian proposes the fix which he uploaded.

In the live session, use synaptic to upgrade the installer.
Then install as normal, that worked and the fix will surely be in the next beta.
entropyfoe-

Thanks - will try this.

Thanks, caprea. Yes, my UEFI update screens are the same as shown on the german thread...I'll try that "Typical Current Idle" setting. I'm using the 4.15.5-antix.1-amd64-smp and I checked CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU=y

I earlier posted that I had installed from an Alpha iso (MX-18a1_x64.iso). I think I saw the image on sourceforge, it was over the weekend I think. I had read on the forum, something about using the latest installer, I had encountered trouble installing grub on updated iso(s). On the Alpha, I again updated Mx-Installer. Since everything was working fine, I stayed with this version, and simply applied all of the available updates. I enabled the test-dev repo and now using the 4.19 Kernel. The twitchy mouse I had with the original install is gone. The mouse is working fine. I don't know if this information is helpful, I hope so.
