Distrowatch 7 day page hit ranking

#1 Post by colin_b »

It strikes me something is amiss.

Since the page hit ranking disappeared and then returned the numbers have changed drastically for many distros.

Manjaro was #1 with well over 3000 hpd, MX was #2 with well over 2000 hpd.

Now Manjaro is #2 with 945 hpd, MX is #8 with 555 hpd.

It seems the numbers are dropping daily.

I just checked and it shows MX Linux still at the #4 spot.
I am command line illiterate. I copy & paste to the terminal. Liars, Wiseguys, Trolls, and those without manners will be added to my ignore list.

But it is curious that almost all distributions in Distrowatch are down.

What it tells me is that most of the clicks per day come.from the top 100 chart rather.than the distro pages or search. So since the chart was missing for a day or 2, clicks per day across the board were very small for those days, but the days a still counted in the average.

What it suggests to me is that the rankings are subject to manipulation and therefore a bit pointless.
HP 15; ryzen 3 5300U APU; 500 Gb SSD; 8GB ram
Aspire V5-571; CPU Intel I3; 500 GB SSD; Intel 2nd Gen Graphics; 8 GB Ram
Aspire XC-866; i3-9100; UHD 630; 8 GB ram; 1TB HDD

In Linux, newer isn't always better. The best solution is the one that works.

Interesting, j2mcgreg.

I wonder about that.

My understanding was that ratings related to the number of visitors linking to each Distro's write-up page at the site. (There may be other "views" of the data presented - ie 7days, month, etc., but it is the number of visits per se.)

You know; if Jesse Smith has read this thread (or someone points it out to him) it would be nice to have his comment about Distrowatch rankings. Basic insight would be great, wouldn't it? Perhaps he has already made a comment somewhere we can link to?

Would be even nicer if we could interact with him about that over a day or two, as well. (He might get some interesting feedback - and something more to write about in his Distrowatch Weekly bulletin.)
