4.17 kernel

#1 Post by Mauser »

NSA Encryption in Linux Kernel 4.17. https://itsfoss.com/nsas-encryption-alg ... community/ Will the MX team rip out this spyware out of the 4.17 kernel?
I am command line illiterate. I copy & paste to the terminal. Liars, Wiseguys, Trolls, and those without manners will be added to my ignore list.

Debian stable-updates sid rolled back to 4.9.0-7 this morning.

It actually eliminated my slow boot with .17 as a bonus.

They offer a quick fix in the article, just to ease your mind:
How to disable Speck from Linux Kernel [Advanced users only]

If you are an average Linux user with Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora and other non-rolling release distributions, chances are that you are not even using Kernel 4.17.

I don’t recommend it for everyone but if you are an advanced user who is habitual of messing with the kernel, check the Linux kernel version and if it uses Kernel 4.17, you may blacklist the Speck kernel module.

If it doesn’t exist already, create /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file and add the following line(s) to it:

Code: Select all

blacklist CONFIG_CRYPTO_SPECK
Thinkpad T430 & Dell Latitude E7450, both with MX-21.3.1
kernal 5.10.0-26-amd64 x86_64; Xfce-4.18.0; 8 GB RAM
Intel Core i5-3380M, Graphics, Audio, Video; & SSDs.

Is this also present in the 4.17.4 AntiX kernel as I have the same version kernel with MX on my T430. I don't use MX much any more having too fun with AntiX an i3.

Why is Linus Torvalds allowing this to happen in the first place he makes the kernels. Suppose money can change anything.
Main : MX 19.1-AHS (i3) 5.4.13-1~mx19+1, Asus B450-i AMD 5 3600 , 32gb Hyper-X 3200 , GTX970 . :linuxlove:
Lenovo T430 : Debian10 antiX17 (i3) , 4.20.12 , i5 , 12gb .
Lenovo X220 : Test Machine (ATM)

I'll try the antiX kernel on my Acer Aspire One, 32bit.
I'm using the 4.17 from the MX test repo.
I just created the file, since it didn't exist.

Where did you get the i3 from? From the web site?

In the article:
Before you panic or form wrong conclusions, you should know that Speck is not a backdoor. It’s just a not-so-strong encryption algorithm from American agency NSA and it’s available as a module in Linux Kernel.
In the post:

So where did you get this "spyware" term out of? It's an encryption protocol for Android and for IoT devices
designed for devices with low computing powers i.e., IoT devices.
Even if it's enabled in kernel is not something that is used when you encrypt something unless you want to use it. Geeeez....

I actually installed 4.17 from backports last night--I thought 4.16 was still there--and it broke my desktop. I had to remove 4.17 to get my desktop back on a vanilla Debian install.
