Appimages

#1 Post by richb »

Please note that there is a thread on appimages. This thread is about a Chrome extension. It would be more appropriate to post in that thread concerning appimages..

Appimage concerns

#2 Post by HessenZone »

I haven't heard anything yet, perhaps because it's still too new, but I have siilar concerns about anything that comes from AppImage, which is IMO pretty much the same thing as the old 90s and later "Stand-Alone Software" for Windows. My concern is that when linux repositories begin providing or sharing applications with AppImage, that those applications may at some future point in time be far more succeptible to having malware installed. We know (or think we know) that we're safe with downloads & installs that come from within our trusted distros, but AppImage is amongst other things, also like a third party repository. If an AppImage becomes corrupted/hacked/infected somehow, it could potentially cause serious harm to users as well. There's a lot to be said for repositories that are completely integrated into their respective distros.
