I do often use it, esp. for older laptops and desktops. The play-test-sound is extremely helpful for just quick checking. Unfortunately it will not do it if only one speaker is found. It would be helpful to include test sound for one-speaker systems too.
Pulse audio gui does not provide such a quick test-sound check.
