Laptop Freezes

#1 Post by Krissharm »

Hi
Me again - I hope I am still welcome.
Today the poor laptop kept freezing. When checking the syslog in var I saw the following

Apr 10 22:08:08 x220 kernel: [ 212.739856] [drm] GPU HANG: ecode 6:-1:0x00000000, reason: Kicking stuck semaphore on rcs0, action: continue

My assumption was that the laptop was too hot, but i'm not sure as the log reports a GPU HANG, but then reports a thermal table change.

My old motorcycle shop media center Emachine 3507 is also getting hinky lately with freezes lately. I have been doing hard reboots even. So my 1st step was to run gsmartctl to see if my hard drive is failing.

On mine, gsmartctl says both hard drives are healthy. So my motherboard may be hinky. So just to be sure. I am going to backup what I want to keep. Using a 1TB external hard drive. Then install AntiX on it again and take MX off of it.
If it keeps freezing. I dumpster dived acquired that Emachine. So no big investment loss. So I guess I will switch out parts and use my IBM in the shop. It looks a lot better now than in that picture. The emachine ram and harddrives fit that IBM also.

That shop computer is mainly for manuals & saved pdf's I saved from the web from forums and such. Also is my streaming radio player through a 200 watt per channel stereo sytem for music in the shop. I also made another user so guys that show up can use it while I work on their bikes. For games or web searches. My wifi antenna is a re-purposed Dish network satellite dish.

I have a couple spare towers because City Hall gives me their going to the landfill gear when they upgrade their systems. I am special that way.

I know this may not help you with your problem. Maybe gsmartctl will say your hard drive is healthy also. Usually freezes are hardware related In My Experience.
Hopefully someone else has a better answer for you.

My X220 is running MX 17 without freezing and temp at 45C.
Edit: just thinking, does you x220 have i5 or i7 cpu? Mine is i5. I7 would run warmer.

Have you ran sensors-detect yet in MX?

Code: Select all

harry@biker:~
$ sensors
coretemp-isa-0000
Adapter: ISA adapter
Core 0: +49.0°C (high = +95.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)
Core 2: +47.0°C (high = +95.0°C, crit = +105.0°C)

dell_smm-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
Processor Fan: 0 RPM
CPU: +49.0°C
SODIMM: +43.0°C
Other: +48.0°C

Its an I5, sadly I couldnt find an i7 with usb 3.0 or the IPS screen...

This was underload. So this may just be the laptop getting hot as it works. I might have to investigate a repaste of the cpu... perhaps that would help?

Judging by the temperatures you have posted, overheating is not the problem.

If you want to be able to monitor temperatures as you work, you could install the 'sensors' plug-in to the panel.
