However, I also don't recommend playing anything beyond Supertux or Supertuxcart on something that old. Thermald is not supposed to be compatible with all Intel chips, and actually incompatible with some. Here's some more info. about thermald ...

Same here, both X220 and large brother T420 both work great on MX, but lots of video and games pushes the cpu and temp will jump up. The Sandybridge is pretty good for basic uses but I wouldn't push it. These machines can get warm under stress. But I'm at 42C right now with just 2 tabs open on FF.
So - I am killing the laptop with heat?
That is causing the gpu hangs?
Since the repaste it doesnt seem as bad, the heat I mean.

My sandybridge cpu can jump from 42C to 67C just loading gmail. it quickly goes back down but keeping it under a heavy load may be causing you glitches.
Edit: compare that to essentially the same machine, only the bigger version Thinkpad T420. The same sandybridge does not jump around temp-wise because it controls heat better with more breathing room. Those little machines are prone to more heat issues.

From what I know sandy bridge is the last cpu generation to use indium soldering instead of pasta, improving heat reduction. You're lucky ;)

Yes... Im not entirely sure what that means in the grand scheme of things. But you make it sound good.

I came across this on the r/thinkpad reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/wiki/ ... rees....22

Some before and after temps from pasting cpu on X230 which is just a bit newer than the x220.
Not sure it will help, but maybe give you an idea of what temp you should be seeing after pasting.

Nice share. Thanks
I have seen improvement - but obviously under load its the same thing.
The syslog was reporting thermal issues. Since the repaste the issues reported are gpu hangs. I suppose they are much the same thing, the machine is underload.

I think I have to concede that MX has allowed me to run a game that shouldn't run on this hardware.... (probably wouldn't run at all on windows!) There is no fix... other than to sit in a freezer.
