Taiwan repo problem

#1 Post by chrispop99 »

A user reports on Facebook that he has difficulty with the Taiwan repo over several day. When testing, I also get 404's from it. Is this something we can deal with please?

I think for the South East Asian region, the Debian mirror used is Hong Kong.

However, the MX repos do not have a HK mirror.

I do think MX Repo Manager could be improved so that manual changes to the Debian mirrors can be made from within the MX app. Right now, you can only click on the "choose fastest mirrors" button. But "fastest" may not mean "most reliable and consistently online" mirrors. If a few of the more well-known Debian mirrors were listed, e.g. USA, German, UK, Sweden, etc, for manual selection by the users, that would be great.

This will be the same way that a user can choose between LA, Utah, Taiwan, NZ, Netherlands, etc mirrors for the MX repos under the MX tab of the Repo Manager.

Sounds like a good change. Are there any downsides to doing as asqwerth suggests?

I should add that this doesn't solve the problem of the Facebook user since he or she was referring to the Taiwan mirrors for MX repo. I think the advice to be given for that issue for now would be for the user to switch to another MX mirror using Repo Manager. LA or Utah mirrors are safe bets.

The problem with the Taiwan mirror will need to be investigated, I guess.

For the Debian mirrors suggestion, we could add a few other mirrors to the list I mentioned above, so as not to be too Europe/USA-centric. Singapore and HK? Japan? China? Australia? what are reliable mirrors to cover the Russia, Indian subcontinent, Middle East and Africa?

i'm located in sg, debian mirror server in sg behave strangely, intermediate good n bad even with fibre bb connection. by far hk debian mirror is the best in sea, no glitch. i suggest if u can relocate mx repo to hk which will best serve sea region.

Just thought I'd chime in to say that I haven't been able to update from the Taiwan repo for several days as well. Been using the New Zealand repo instead.

The discussion about debian mirrors reminded me of a script from arch linux, Reflector. It can rank and sort mirrors based on several criteria. Perhaps there are something similar in debian?

Thanks, good question. The Devs have broached this topic with respect to mirrorbrain, and it would not surprise me to see us turn back to it now that MX-17.1 has been released.

+1,

A Hong Kong mirror would be perfect. For example:

Chinese University of HK mirrors repos of various distros: http://ftp.cuhk.edu.hk/home.html

Or this (Open source mirror, seems open for suggestions to mirror some content):
https://mirror-hk.koddos.net

Or one in mainland China!? LUGs of Universities in Beijing and Shanghai (and some others) hosts various, incl. Debian, Mint, Ubuntu, Arch and dozens others... https://mirrors.tuna.tsinghua.edu.cn
http://mirrors.ustc.edu.cn
https://mirrors.shu.edu.cn

MX being currently so hot and missing there is a waste, would make sense to send them a message to investigate.
