mx linux 17 first-initial impression + few basic questions, first ever boot from usb

#1 Post by makemxlinuxeasy »

minor ux thing

* after chrome downloads, it doesnt auto-open
* you need to click 2 times to open it
* but this a fx problem im guessing

more minor ux thing

* after you open the chrome, i believe there were 2 sets of confirmations when typically there is 1
* but at least you can check to remember as is typical in other oses

a bigger minor ux thing

* it did not auto-close once it was done installing as other oses do
* instead i needed to close it

---

few questions

what is the default shortcut/hotkey to max a window? couldnt find anything via google

how or where is the setting to dragdrop the icons on the 'left bar'?

---

the experience at this point was w/e, and i did what i needed to do which is getting to the point of downloading chrome, and opening it, and then i noticed..

highlight bug

when using chrome for a tiny bit, i noticed a 'highlight bug' or error

1. when you highlight text
2. then when you move the mouse to the left,
3. and highlight back to the right
4. it stops highlighting at that point

i've never seen bugs like this before, or anywhere

* if i highlight slowly, it doesnt happen
* it either happens if you highlight left too far or too fast
* im guessing it's likely due to 'too fast'

---

1-line backstory summary -- with an immense amount of needless trouble & pain, there was only 1 person on a diff linux site that gave a helpful answer to a simple question of how to use a linux from usb

* 'just use etcher'

so on win10 i used:

* https://github.com/resin-io/etcher

* instead of https://github.com/pbatard/rufus

it was a lot simpler, just a few clicks

rufus was technical and confusing

---

now i know how to go about testing a few other linux distros

* kubuntu plasma
* mx linux xcfe
* elmentory os (w/e they use)

so on to the 3rd and last one tomorrow or something!

the manual has many of the answers you seek, and its translated into several major languages now.

Its not supposed to auto-open. However, chrome can be slow to open the first time you launch during a session.
more minor ux thing

* after you open the chrome, i believe there were 2 sets of confirmations when typically there is 1
* but at least you can check to remember as is typical in other oses
no it doesn't. you launched it twice I suspect.
a bigger minor ux thing

* it did not auto-close once it was done installing as other oses do

what doesn't auto-close? mx-packageinstaller? why would you want it to? YOu might want to install something else for instance. synaptic doesn't open close. in fact, no package installer I know of auto-closes.

check out Settings->Window Manager->Keyboard for a list of hot keys for window management.

how or where is the setting to dragdrop the icons on the 'left bar'?
for each item you want to move, right-click the item and select "Move"

I suggest filing a bug with Google for that one.

FYI: mx "test" repo is not the same thing as debian testing repo.

Maybe Gdebi installation pop-up? Not sure what OP meant...

rewriting that part:

1. open fx
2. type 'download chrome'
3. click on relevant link
4. press 'download'
5. i think there was one confirmation screen or something
6. after chrome downloads, it doesnt auto-open
7. you need to click 2 times to open it
etc.

That is Normal behavior. Navigate to the download folder and clicking on the deb brings up gdebi and click on install.

Why download a deb for Chrome when it is in the MXPI?

I will refer again to The Manual as the answer for many of the questions.

ok ill test how the 3rd & last linux version is after this usb thing is fixed

ill likely end up going macos win10 or chromeos long-term based on the experiences so far

dolphin_oracle wrote:"you launched it twice I suspect.
that's werid maybe it was slow to open or something so maybe clicked twice

dolphin_oracle wrote:I suggest filing a bug with Google for that one.
never did this: 'filing a bug'

nothing else has this problem, win10 doesnt, the other linux versions doesnt

i think its a mx linux prblem

notes for comparison reference:

* check out Settings->Window Manager->Keyboard for a list of hot keys for window management.

* dragdrop featue/function not available

this is also something i do not like

i have dont have to read a bible for anything else

for some other things in life there are helpful and good things

this is far too complex and complicated

and it has been a very bad experience overall
