General Linux Command Question

#1 Post by chiguy1256 »

I am exploring various Linux distros and a couple of BSD's by using VirtualBox. I'm just trying to increase my knowledge and proficiency. I'm using the latest edition of Linux All in One for Dummies, 5th edition. It discusses some of the common Linux commands. One of the commands mentioned is compress. This command is not recognized in MX Linux and some other Debian based distros. Interesting enough, I did get man page results in Fedora and Manjaro. The man page results for both of those say "POSIX's Programmers Manual" at the top. I thought all Linux distros were POSIX compliant? Please advise. Thanks.

"Compress" is not a command that has to be in a distro for it to be POSIX compliant. We can look at packages.debian.org to see which package you would need to install...

https://packages.debian.org/search?sear ... e&arch=any

So you'd need ncompress.
