Adverse effects from Compiz

I'm an Ubuntu/Xubuntu user since 2009! MX Linux is absolutely incredible! It has pulled things together so nicely.

I did have one issue. I saw that somebody within the MX crew was a big Compiz fan- LIKE ME! I got really excited that I could get my Compiz desktop effects back. Well, I DID! I am so utterly happily right meow. However, when Compiz isn't running the window decorations are totally futsed. Could we get some sort of a tool that would put everything back together nicely? A theme/icon/GUI restore feature? Or maybe a tool that lets you switch between A) The default working versions and B) the one you futsed the hell up ?

I have Compiz starting up when the OS starts so everything is fine now. It's beautiful and awesome. Thank you!!!

I can switch from compiz to the xfce desktop with the fusion icon, right click>select window manager. The window decorations in xfce render perfectly. System specs, MX Tools, Quick System Info may help diagnose your issue.

As long as I start Compiz (and I have it auto-starting), everything looks fine. The window decorations are there- but at some point, Compiz stopped and everything was shaken up and I had no way to restore back to the defaults.

Did you get compiz from the Package Installer? And again System specs, MX Tools, Quick System Info may help diagnose your issue.

I did. I won't use any PPAs on this distro until I know what I'm doing. Also, the repos here seem to contain everything.

I'm running a Ryzen 1700 16Gb ram, SSD, Nvidia 1060.

PPA's are a hit or miss proposition. Hopefully someone will jump in with more knowledge of your system.

Everything is good now as long as I don't stop Compiz. I really am a Compiz fan so I plan to just keep it.

Under the fusion icon, there are 2 other options for displaying the Compiz graphics : indirect rendering and one other (can't recall its name , not at my machine at the moment) .

Have you tested stopping and starting Compiz with these 2 options? One of them might just work better.

Are you using Compiz 0.9 installed via synaptic or terminal, or version 0.8 Reloaded, via MX Package Installer's Popular Apps tab?

If Compiz is still working, click the fusion icon, goto Select Window Manager, and then select Xfwm4.

This will change the window manager, and should hopefully solve your problem.

Then OP won't be on Compiz, which he likes. Unless you're saying to switch to xfwm4 and back again.
