MX-15 on Apple

#1 Post by Jerry3904 »

I want to start putting specific hardware information into the Wiki before Final.

To get this done, I would like to ask people who have installed MX-15 onto an Apple machine to summarize their procedures in this thread. I have seen some posts over the last few weeks, but do not have the time or patience to hunt them all down and rewrite them. For consistency, I request that the information be put into the following format:

1) Machine
2) Installation steps
3) Function summary, with 3 entries/columns:
--Hardware
--MX-15 Status
--Notes
4) Other comment or link to longer description

Thanks for your help.
Production: 5.10, MX-23 Xfce, AMD FX-4130 Quad-Core, GeForce GT 630/PCIe/SSE2, 16 GB, SSD 120 GB, Data 1TB
Personal: Lenovo X1 Carbon with MX-23 Fluxbox and Windows 10
Other: Raspberry Pi 5 with MX-23 Xfce Raspberry Pi Respin

2. Refind is on the HD for USB EFI boot. ISO to thumb drive using Unetbootin, shut down, reboot and choose the thumb drive
from Refind display, load it. Pick from the Grub2 menu can pick which kernel to load and the 32 bit loads.
Installed to 16 gig SD mounted USB, formated ext4 and swap files, when done, rebooted to the Install. That worked in 32
bit in all ways, then Install the MATE and KDE desktops from the Mega Installer. Rebooted and started tweaking the two
new desktops.

3a. MX-15 b2 works on this hardware well enough, some tweaking and there is internet research.

b. works.

c. Refit or refind will work on 32 or 64 bit with OS X 5.-, 6.-, 7.-, 8.-, 9.-, not on 10.0 or 11.0 64 bit. MACTELS only.

4. Info at a later date. :popcorn:

My Apple laptops are old and are Macintel machines,two are 32 bit only, with the third being 64 bit. All Macintel
powered machines work and install the same way, only the version of OS X makes them boot differently. Apple has left the
32 bit machines behind and concentrates solely on 64 bit OS X machines. Core 2 Duel, I5 and I7 CPUs powered are the 64
bit machines and now the OS X updates are handled only as downloads from the Apple store. Off the shelf, none of the
Apple machines boot USB or RC ports, so how to duel boot them.

The first Macintel EFI boot loader menu that came out is called rEFIt and works with the 32 or 64 bit machines up to OS
X 10.9, code name Lion. rEFIt is not fancy and does what is needed to do. Have it loaded on my 15" MacBook Pro 32 bit
laptop, loaded OS X 10.6 and Kubuntu 14.04 on the laptop's HD using rEFIt, so it does work even tho it is old. However,
I did not stop there, loaded MX-14.4 on a thumb drive. Played all the different thumb drive settings and then installed
MX-14.4 to a external USB 3.5" HD. Mean while, rEFIt menu would boot it in. Started with MX-15b1 32 bit from .iso to
thumb drive and played with it for a short time. Taken MX-15b1 live thumb drive and installed on a 16 gig USB SD card,
shut down removed the live USB thumb, restarted the 32 bit machine and rEFIt menu stops and shows the three OSs to load.
Picked the SD USB with MX-15b1 on it and away the booting went. MX-15b1 was loaded, made the settings I needed, stream
some music in via VLC, setup my home area and updates ready, updated via the repos and there MX-15. Later added KDE4 and
MATE desktops to MX-15. Did the same thing with AntiX-15 full with KDE4 and LXDE desktops added onto another SD USB 16
card. So rEFIt does work on the 32 bit Apple machines. Also loaded a USB HD with Ubuntu MATE 32 bit using rEFIt.
With rEFIt it hasn't been updated in ages, there is another like EFI program that has taken over their function in that
area.

http://refit.sourceforge.net/

On to rEFInd, my fore runner to the Air machine battery is dead, so no 32 bit testing or playing with rEFInd. Works with
the 32 or 64 bit machines up to OS X 10.9, code name Lion. Just got the updated rEFInd to try out 64 bit Yosemite load
on. No MX-15 USB loads works yet but, with the newest rEFInd version, which is a fix to load EFI for Yosemite and
El Captain OS X. Is it the Linux boot or the 64 bit EFI Yosemite/El Captain or both that need fixing. Went from no USB
booting MX-15 to booting, loaded with a blank for the desktop and a power off screen. Made a DVD live disk of MX-15 and
it works, so rEFInd is working some what, Just no cigar yet. :popcorn:

Does this work?
I do not have an Apple product to try this on, but I would estimate that the Mac boot loader to refit to grub to kernel would add for a lot of delay.

Out of date, blog written in 2012, does not come close to what I have done with rEFIt or rEFInd. Besides, what normal
Apple user would use this, if it works at all? Will try 0.10.1 rEFInd in a couple of days. :popcorn:

In fact it is I also have a long history of use Mac. :eek:

1) MacBook (Early 2006)
It is the first time known as the MacBook that became Intel CPU.
CPU is Intel Core Duo.

2) make sure the assignment of the USB memory in diskutil command.
It will, for example, /dev/disk2.

Code: Select all

$ diskutil list
Creating a USB disk uses the dd command from OS X.

Code: Select all

$ diskutil unmountDisk /dev/disk2
$ dd if=/Users/username/Desktop/MX-15.01_386.iso of=/dev/disk2 bs=1m
$ diskutil eject /dev/disk2
netbootin is also present in OS X. But it is often not working.

The Mac install the rEFInd than OS X.
I am sure the normal operation of the rEFInd 0.10.1.
This is the ideal of the boot loader in the early Intel Mac.
Early Intel Mac can not boot the MX-15 from the standard boot loader.

It leaves to create a free space in the disk capacity in the disk utility of OS X.
Recent GParted to support the disk space of the Mac, but some problems can occur.

Mac keyboard to assign a special operation to a function key.
We will need that Fn+F2 instead of F2.

After the MX-15 has booted to launch other PC as well, be proceed with the installation.
Having already installed rEFInd, it does not require the installation of GRUB2.

After restarting the Mac, rEFInd displays the MX-15 to the list.

MX-15 using the May 2016 Snapshot from Live DVD worked great on MacBook Pro 17" 8,3 (Late 2011)!
(in fact, it even picked up the BroadCom WiFi automatically where even the most recent Ubuntu Mate 16.04 and Linux Lite 3.0 didn't):

Image

Only annoyance was having to hold down the Option/Alt key on Boot to find the Live DVD. With the Wi-Fi, Sound, and Video all seeming to work, I might even try to do a full single- or dual-boot install... Still a little hesitant of mucking with EFI though.

I use my MacMini 2009 as media server and boot UEFI my usb stick holding the Arch operating system while mounting my HDD as BTRFS. From 2009 UEFI is supported and you won't need OSX or anything else for that mater.

Hope that helps, every Linux UEFI bootable OS should work just fine.

Since someone woke this old thread, MX16 installed with ease on my 2012 Mac Mini and everything works. In our manual, Section 2.3.2 it says we have a document in development, I'd be happy to revise it and complete the details. I actually want to attempt triple boot this thing using the latest, MacOS 10.12 Sierrra, Windows 10 Anniversary update 1607 and of course, MX 16 Metamorphosis.

MX-17 on Apple MacBook 2008 and MacBookPro 2011

#10 Post by Hierax_ca »

Update:
- MacBookPro 17" (8,3 Late 2011) and MacBook 13" (5,1 Late 2008) both are working with MX-17 from Live DVD!
(most noticeable difference is slightly more RAM use than the above MX-15 test 467MB vs 362MB on 17" MacBookPro.)
MX-17.1: Thinkpad x60t, x61t, x200t, x220t.
MX-18 (32-bit) Thinkpads: 600x*, A31p, T43p, T60p;
