A couple of posts on in this thread:
Actually, as the main Debian/Xfce maintainer, I'm not sure “pretty
awesome” would be the term I'd use.

Unfortunately, we're more or less 2.5 people working on Xfce inside
Debian. And I fear that having more users doesn't mean we'll have more
maintainers, so we'll just have more backlogs in bug.

And 2.5 people on Xfce/Debian is actually pretty fine, when you look at
upstream Xfce state of affairs.

So if having Xfce as the default desktop in Debian (which actually
doesn't mean much, considering it's only for new install from CDs, which
are not really used outside of released versions) means more people
helping us and upstream, then it's fine. But I somehow doubt it.

Regards,

I've always felt like it doesn't matter much which DE Debian goes with as the "default" one.

I wouldn't mind seeing Xfce get some love from Debian as the default desktop :-) I'm not a Gnome hater anymore, I don't mind it on a small laptop, but probably could not stand it on a desktop. Kde is pretty awesome, but a bit resource hungry compared to Xfce. Xfce seems to me to be good anywhere and everywhere, I use it on laptops and desktops and you can configure it multiple ways.

Me, I love bells, whistles, and eye candy. Now that I have a relatively current machine with lots of resources, I use Jessie with KDE 4.11 a lot and enjoy it. Having said that, I would prefer Xfce over Gnome as the default any day.

I'm not sure about that, defaults are important, and unless you screw up the product completely (IE I'm looking at you) the default almost always wins in popularity.

I really meant that in the sense that with Debian most people are gonna choose the DE at installation time. Not quite the same as if, say, Ubuntu or Mint (or Mepis) decided to go with Xfce as the default DE.

Well, yes, but then people have a choice of installing Ubuntu, Xubuntu, Kubuntu... and if the DE is chosen at installation time why have a "default"? I would actually like if Debian would present a list of let's say 5 major DE ordered alphabetically and let the user choose instead of having a default.

Exactly. And Debian does offer KDE, LXDE, and Xfce isos already (I went with KDE when I first started out with Debian, but for my current "production" machine I went with Wheezy Xfce).

Sex sells. Put a beautiful woman in a bikini on a box telling you great the product is, and it will sell. Even if the product is trash, full of bugs, and constantly crashes. How do you think windoze went from 512 kb memory needs to "8 Gib memory minimum to work effectively"? It has been proven that packaging is what sells more than the effectiveness of the product.

Here in the USA drugs (medicines) are being sold over the airways via the television with beautiful people telling how bad they were before they started taking this particular drug. "So ask your doctor if this may help you", even if you have the symptoms but not the disease.

Sorry! My mind runs on totally different levels at times, and I get way ahead of myself.

MX-14 is a great os with xfce. Everybody was commenting about the different desktop environments, some that looked prettier than others;some with all the bells and whistles;memory usage.

I was commenting on the observation that there are lots of programs out there with pretty boxes that are trash. Some are such memory hogs that they need 4 Gib memory just to run decently.

But I was NOT flaming MX-14. I apologize for my madness.
