The other choice is sort of "make your own distro" where a new user is created at install. That does require moving stuff to /etc/skel...
Thanks Stevo, so this is how to customise the "raw" distro distribution. In the Gnome respin I only added Desktop folder with installer icon in /etc/skel. The hidden folders/files can be copied there as well, great.

Yes, but make sure you don't have any personal information in those hidden folders!

Yes, that's correct. I don't want everyone in the office to have my username and data!

Excellent. This has been a good thread explaining the choices made while making the snapshot for different purposes. A lot of the same choices are explained in DolphinOracle's video (several years old now) about using the snapshot tool.

MX Snapshot is the killer app that drew me here in the first place. Love it.

Jan K, no need at all (I guess I should say 'probably') for a tutorial. Just open the software and it sort of explains itself. The only bit of trickiness comes if you want to customize what gets saved, and that's one config file, also pretty much self-documenting from within the GUI.

@kurtz: thanks, appreciate it, but once I've made the transition to Linux, a group of people will follow suit.

By then, I'll have a complete guide of "everything" ;) and since whatever chosen backup program will be the single most important piece of software with no room for trial-and-error, a simple and complete step-by-step guide for backup and not least different kind of restores is indeed "needed".

But I'll of course get there in the end, one way or the other.

Amen-you GO. I want to read these tuts when you're done, too!

Short term: I did a little digging for you and found this:

and this:

(I was pretty sure D.O. had one somewhere.)

In my new Gnome buster respin update, after config the look & feel, I moved the .config and .local to /etc/skel. Some of the folders not related to Gnome were removed from each hidden folder. Made snapshot and burnt CD. Everything are there but all configs (extensions, icon and wallpaper) are deactivated. What/where holds the config activation??

I know I marked this as solved, but onq quick question.
Do I move /etc/skel from the PC to the USB and I'm done, nothing else right? I just overwrite the USB drive's /etc/skel?

To keep the configs activated, I kept all files as they were in .config and .local (except folder keyrings in .local). The startup iso and install, has now same look & feel as shown in screenshot.
