(SOLVED) Guest Session/Account in MX Linux

#1 Post by srq2625 »

I'm looking to deploy MX Linux as a sort of kiosk device in a hostel type setting. Need the following:
  • Guest account/session with defaulted/known/published password
  • The "account" to refresh to known state on each login or on each logout
  • The administrator's account to be hidden but the "Guest" account name to be displayed by default by the greeter
  • The menu to offer only those functions deemed appropriate, for example: FireFox, LibreOffice, and a few others
  • Block any possibility of the "guest" user having access to anything resembling a terminal window
Linux Mint (and probably Ubuntu) offer the above. One person's implementation of this is found on this page. I was just hoping there was something that could be implemented in MX Linux.

ETA: I don't, necessarily, need a step by step guide here - just a pointer to where to look or some ideas that I can flesh out.

TIA: - really appreciate any help offered.

@Jerry3904 - Thanks for the pointer. That was a lot of information to digest and, after having done so, I've come to the conclusion that it's a bit too much work to get something Debian based when Linux Mint has a process that is almost Out-Of-The-Box working (see the link in OP).

But I do appreciate the pointer and the knowledge I gained from all that reading. There's stuff there that I can take and apply to my MX installs.

Marking this closed.

Thanks for the Mint link, I'll take a look at that.

Times ago I have read this :

Code: Select all

https://sparkylinux.org/forum/index.php/topic,4462.msg11323.html#msg11323
is much more simple.

Some one asked
Hi there,

for a school I try to revive old Asus EEE 1005HA Netbooks.
Sparky with LXDE fits fine & works.

Before I leave this Netbooks to the students hands I'd like to make them a little "waterproof / safe against misconfiguration" (i.e. no more girl pictures on the desktop...) by activating an auto login GUEST ACCOUNT that is created and deleted on each and every reboot (users still can save their data on their network share...).

Do you guys have any advice on where to get information how to configure so?

Tkx in advance!
pavroo of Sparky Linux

Change (as root):
Code: [Select]
#allow-guest=true
to:
Code: [Select]
allow-guest=true
in the file:
Code: [Select]
/etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
I am not very sure if works in XFCE but I will try :)
Anyone else can confirm if works with XFCE Desktop ? Can really easy added to MX Tools as a single button, if function.

i tried above explained also

Code: Select all

https://askubuntu.com/questions/95405/how-to-enable-guest-account-automatic-login
No function i my MX.....perhaps because I have removed kiosk mode also buttons on Close dialog and I have blocked Guest mode times ago ( I do not remember exactly how but probably in /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf ) ? Buuu...
